*** Official 2025 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Many here agreed adding a quality bat and top end rotation starter was needed and surprisingly the Cubs have done both now. Did pretty well rebuilding the bullpen too. Didn't acquire a top end closer so if Palencia doesn't lock that down they can still trade for one at the deadline.

I'm shocked. Completely shocked. Well done Tommy.

I'd check with the Mariners to see if they'd do Nico for one of the pitchers but if not, just let it ride and use Shaw all over the place

You seem to be on the "trade Nico" wagon.....which I understand, but I think we'd regret that immediately if we did so.

I'm all for it if you get immediate help. All of his value (defense and base running) are going to decline with age. Let somebody else pay for it

I'm not for trading him for kids.

I agree… as a fan im not ready to get rid of Nico. He’s our best for average hitter and an amazing 2nd baseman. I think best option is to role with Shaw as utility man. There’s still a few pitchers out there if we want to spend more

I have not seen anything on X but maybe Passan said it on TV/Podcast. I have to believe one of them will be gone.

Unless they get offered a haul you keep Nico and figure out 2B in 2027. Nico is too good too just trade away even if you think Shaw can replace his production. This move signals the Cubs are going to compete in 2026 and that may move Shaw to a utility player but that still improves the roster depth and versatility.

Yeah that .300 average doesn't matter. He's 28, you could quite literally say fielding gets worse with every player ever.

Stunned Bregman is finally the player the Cubs go all in from a contract standpoint - 5 years and $35M AAV.

But with Imanaga, Taillon, Suzuki, Happ and Hoerner all FA's after 2026, maybe Ricketts & FO decided to go all-in in 2026. Those 5 players 2026 payroll totals $88M.

Now we'll see how it plays out with Hoerner & Shaw. Still not buying Shaw is going to be a utility player beyond 2026. Either he'll get traded or Nico leaves via FA.

Could Shaw play some Left Field? Especially when Happ gets in one of his prolonged cold streaks.

There's no slug there. Do you want to be on the hook for what will probably be 5/100 and trust that his value holds? Happ gets crucified for the same money and a better bat.

Like I said, if you can get immediate help for this year where they're all in, do it but if not you can get creative and get Shaw 350-400 ABs.

Trade Nico and Assad to the Padres for Miller? Man, I dream of that guy closing games for the Cubs, he is filthier than any reliever I remember since Eric Gagne's salad days. Shaw is a natural 2B with a similar skill set to Nico.

I am surprised but ecstatic that the only big market team I root for actually acted like a big market team! Well done, FO

The Cubs Convention is a great motivator for Jed to get deals done….
