*** Official 2025 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Hey! It's something.

We'll see how hefty the return is. Probably Caissie plus.

Wiggins better not be in the deal.

So I guess its Suzuki back to right and Ballesteros as the full time DH?

I dont see how this helps with our one major problem, replacing Tuckers production.
Well you get the SP you needed at a very cheap salary so that you can theoretically continue pursuing a bag (i.e. Bregman/Bichette/Bellinger). Suzuki is going to be in the lineup almost everyday regardless, so the questions is Caissie/Suzuki a better RF/DH combo than Suzuki/Mo?

I can see how Caissie would be expendable if you feel good about Mo taking the DH job on almost full time AND you think you can use the remaining money (since Cabrera will be <$4mil in 2026) to add another bat.

Hope this happens and will be interesting to see what we send out in the deal too. He's under team control through arbitration for the next 3 seasons and turns 28 in April. The Cubs likely were never going to spend on top end starting pitching in free agency this offseason so this is probably the next best option. Comes with injury past but the upside and low salary + multiple years of controls is worth the risk.

I doubt the Cubs have ever been seriously in on discussions involving Bregman giving the numbers floating out there right now. I'd be shocked if they were serious on any of those 3 unless they just want to go on a 1 year deal which I don't see happening. Especially Bellinger makes no sense because he's already been shunned by the Cubs before. Bichette would either have to move to 3B or Cubs move someone to make room for him to play SS or 2B somehow.

Keep seeing things that teams have "inquired" about Nico but I don't see them moving him without a huge haul in the return. Would love to see them work out an extension with him before he hits free agency but I would guess he will want to test the market as he should as he's one of the better 2B in the league.

This would make sense if that was our ONE major problem. We needed SP and another bat. Hopefully the bat is still coming.

My ideal offseason before today looked something like this:

  • Kazuma Okamoto
  • Pete Fairbanks
  • Trade for a SP that we talked about at the deadline

But this would change things and open up the option to sign a SP as well.

Edit: and obviously smaller RP and bench pieces
If we somehow substitute Bregman or Bichette for Okamoto I'll be ecstatic. I'm mostly fine with how the bullpen has shaken out.

Edit: Still a longshot of course

Go sign Bichette now.

Let the Giants overpay for Nico and restock the farm.

Let's see if little Jed has it in him.

Great news.

Now I hope we address third not adding an outfielder. Suzuki in right Ballestareos DH 90% of the time. Other than Tucker I’m not sure there’s any upgrade that’s significant enough to move the needle. I know Mo Baller isn’t a sure thing but guys with compact swings that supply solid power to good contact rate are the guys I want to bet on. But 3B is an easier upgrade.

I agree. Find a defensive piece to give you some flexibility in right and go get someone for third base. I just don't think Shaw's bat is good enough.

Strange pick up especially since it probably will be on a MLB deal since he was DFA.
Probably a low-risk depth pickup. If we need that roster space, we'll just DFA him.

Looks like he's been outrighted once in his career already, so if we do end up DFAing him and he clears waivers, he would not have to accept an outright assignment.
