***Official 2024 Weather Thread***

Looks like the severe weather tonight will be around 2 am for central Iowa. Those ones can be pretty nasty. Sounds like a lot of lightning and wind.

I have tickets to the Balloon Classic in Indianola on Wednesday. Something tells me they may not go up...
The field is an absolute mess right now with the rain Indianola has had. Already cancelled for tonight just because of the field conditions.

Balloons have had 8 chances to go up so far, and 7 have been cancelled.

I think it fully stopped and restarted storming in Ankeny today 6 different times, at least. Finally now appearing to be out of it until late tonight. Got heavy winds, heavy rains, severe thunder/lightning, spats of hail, the whole works today.

I was going to say I think last night was the only time they have been up right?

I know a balloonist and she is convinced it is getting windier around here.

Kinda interesting the path this morning looks exactly the same as the area shaded in the enhanced risk this evening

Can any of our career meteorologists enlighten us on this? Reed Timmer is calling it a “wind bag event” on Twitter, and it does seem like the storms that keep coming through are on some sort of conveyer belt hitting the same areas repeatedly.

Wind bags are what tornado chasers call storms that aren’t going to produce tornadoes, just straight winds.

…and running parallel to a stationary boundary insuring the paths of successive storms don’t vary much.

Pea size hail around 2:15am in West Des Moines. Lots rain in the past 24hrs. Sump pump ran for the first time since we installed a new one in 2017.

Man I feel bad for SE Iowa. They are getting pounded
