How bad is tonight supposed to be? I plan on leaving tonight around 9:30 PM to head to a race that I have in Nebraska tomorrow. I don't want to drive through bad storms and I don't want to leave my mom alone at the house watching the animals with a big storm coming.

Trying to decide if I should go still tonight at 9:30 PM or leave at like 6 AM tomorrow.

The Omaha-Des Moines severe activity looks to peak from late afternoon thru sunset. Storms could linger well into the night.

Spend the day building an ark. Put the animals on the ark and make mom the captain. Leave tonight

Well - I slept through last nights, once I shut the weather radio off. Wish they could just go off for tornado warnings. Oh well.

We're driving North tonight - going to try to make it to the in-laws before the storms get to them.

You can edit the alert types and counties that they alert for.

2.5 inches in SE Iowa. Sump ran every 30 seconds for a while. We finished July with 8.2 inches.
UPDATE: MORE RAIN ON THE WAY.

Greater Des Moines shows 1.25” hail over a massive swath of area extending from waukee across to the east side of Des Moines, yet all pictures and videos only show pea size or slightly larger pretty much everywhere. Anyone see any bigger stuff come down?

This morning on Ch13, Megan said to expect severe storms again after 9 pm.

You mean that’s what the warning states? Thats going to be radar indicated. Radar usually overestimates hail sizes. Also if someone finds one or two golf balls in a sea of marbles they are probably going to report “golf ball sized hail”.

I think tonight may be more significant in terms of intensity that what many people think. I'm just glad it won't be at 3am so I can get some sleep.
Are they projecting tornadoes or high winds with these storms, or just heavy rain, lightning and thunder like last night? I could do without cleaning up tree debris for the 10th time this summer.

KCCI shows western half of Iowa in severe weather level 3. That’s a pretty decent chance of large hail, significant wind and isolated tornadoes.
