***Official 2024 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Don’t necessarily agree with all of the insight but here’s a nice article on the Cubs 40 man situation.

tl;dr we have 48 guys on the 40 man, need to have it at 40 or below 5 days after the WS, and the author thinks we could have it to as low at 31 when it’s all said and done. We will definitely need it to 38 if we plan to add Caissie and Cowles

Its pretty spot on I think and don't really disagree with most of the assessments. Only 1 I think he.might be off on is Tauchman. While I agree he is cheap and useful if Bellinger opts in I don't see the point in keeping a 34 year old OF with no options left when you already have 4 OF and at least 2 other guys in Alcantara and Caissie with options if you want to carry a 5th OF. Like the article says I would not be surprised if Canario is moved in some kind of trade, just feels like he doesn't have a path at this point. Don't see a point in keeping both Vasquez and Masterbouni so they probably pick 1 and non tender the other. The pitching side of things pretty spot on with non tendering guys with injury woes or lack of options.

Don't know who else they need to protect from the rule 5 draft other than Caissie and Cowles but if they are going to be active in free agency especially on the pitching side of things there is no point in tendering marginal guys without options when you can try to bring them back on a minor league deal or just move on entirely. Can't keep running the same guys out there expecting different results,.we've seen how that has gone lately.

Owen Caissie - Will obviously be added
Burl Carraway
Ben Cowles
Manuel Espinoza
Christian Franklin
Darius Hill
Ed Howard
Ben Leeper
Zac Leigh
Rafael Morel - Christophers brother
B. J. Murray
Reggie Preciado
Frankie Scalzo Jr,
Chase Strumpf

This was the list of names I found are Rule 5 eligible and not on our 40 Man.

Tribune was able to interview Ricketts.

Confirmed we’re above the tax line, likely by $300,000 - this is nothing short of embarrassing for any organization given you can have up to $20 MM over.

Was asked if Jed would be extended to avoid the lame duck year and side stepped it by saying Jed is under contract this year and thinks Jed will have a great offseason to get us to the postseason.

My guess is Jed will be told he has to make the postseason and be under the tax to keep his job. If he doesn’t, the new guy will have an open paycheck with minimum penalty for going over.

Ed Howard…worst 1st round pick in Cubs history?
That award goes to Hayden Simpson hands down in my opinion for a number of reasons, chief among them was he was drafted specifically because the cubs were being cheap.

Ed had a major hip injury that more or less cost us a chance to see if he would ever develop.

Hoerner had surgery 10/11 and is likely looking at a 4-6 month recovery, which I’d argue is another concern with our medical staff. If this was something we knew about, he should’ve had this done once we were out of the playoffs to minimize the risk of missing spring training.

Thinking of potential 1B hypotheticals - If Belli opts in, trade Busch, sign Goldschmidt to a 1 year deal. Let Belli/Goldschmidt work off each other with the expectation both clear the books the following year.

Meanwhile, you work on Caissie and Long to be the solutions post 2025.

If Nico had this issue and they knew about it they should of shut him down right after they got eliminated from playoff contention and got the surgery done then. Not like we were lacking in 2B options to fill the spot for the last few weeks. Let's hope for the shorter end of the recovery period but this pretty much takes a potential trade involving him out of the picture for now.

It's so frustrating to see how they have not managed injuries well the past few years. A "short" IL stint rarely is that anymore any turns into some kind of nagging thing that lingers for awhile. Or they try to avoid the IL and play short a player for over a week then it turns into an IL stint or they were out for what was essentially an IL stint.

I know you don't like Busch but why would you dump him for worse production (Goldschmidt) and two guys with zero MLB at bats? That's before you talk about trading a borderline Gold Glover at first for two guys that have played spotty minor league innings there.

Busch has 5 years of control left and was all but a top 10 1B bat this year.

I like Busch - I do not believe his offensive production is good enough for a quality postseason 1B - but I do like him and think there’s room for him on this team.

I’m just thinking of hypotheticals in which Jed has to make the playoffs while also not making long term financial commitments in case we have a new president next year.

I get that. Nothing Jed has done in his tenure has led me believe that he would change 'tactics' now. Even if he was concerned about his own future. I'm afraid that he keeps operating as usual.

Agree regarding Jed. I just think a change will be made for offensive purposes, and really, the only offensive guys you can trade are Paredes, Hoerner, and Busch. Everyone else has NTCs or named PCA.

Another one I won’t be pounding the table for but would be a creative move

Paredes would’ve been a top 5 3B if he played every game in Minute Maid. Should Bregman leave, I’d be trying to swing a deal with Houston and seeing if they’d throw in a little $$$ for Hader, since it appears he’s not well liked in Houston.
