You and I have very, very different views if you don’t think this move was a move to unload his 2024 contract as much, if not more so, than to avoid a $2.5 MM buyout next year.I get you’re looking for more reasons to **** on the front office but come on. Even for you this is a stretch.
We’ve released Neris (who everyone wanted gone anyway) to avoid the option and put Smyly on waivers to likely try and avoid his buyout.
The Angels put a quarter of their roster on waivers with one of their top starters, three relievers and two starting outfielders.
Completely different things.
Yup - IMO, there is zero reason not to put Wisdom, Tauchman, and Merryweather on waivers. The $2.5 mil buyout on the option is going to be the thing some teams may pass on claiming Smyly because it's more than just picking up the remainder of his salary this season, but just need 1 team willing to do it that wants to bolster their bullpen. Merryweather has not been good and would probably go unclaimed if put on waivers. I don't see anyone claiming Wisdom if they put him out there too. The only other player on the roster that it would make sense to try is Tauchman as he really has not played much lately with the emergence of PCA and they need to clear a path for giving Caissie some AB in September. He has some value as a bench OF that plays good defense would think there is a good chance someone would claim him.
Disagree about Taillon. He has reverted to his historical performance which is a 4.00 ERA over his career. He will have trade value in Nov/Dec for some team looking for a solid 3-5 starter who has been a reliable inning eater. Cubs might have to chip in some of his 2025 salary, but they should be able to get a decent prospect or mid-level major league player.Yup - IMO, there is zero reason not to put Wisdom, Tauchman, and Merryweather on waivers.
My radical other thought that I haven’t seen anywhere (probably for good reason) is if you didn’t get any offers worth a **** for Taillon, maybe put him on waivers and see if you can save some space there.
If the system is setup to let you cut costs, take advantage of it.
Yes, that’s what it is. It’s also not even close to ditching 25% of your active roster in one day. It’s one reliever. You and I have very, very different views if you don’t think this move was a move to unload his 2024 contract as much, if not more so, than to avoid a $2.5 MM buyout next year.
They’re very clearly, very obviously trying to get under the luxury tax before the end of the season. Just like the Angels.
My point was that they’re trying to shed payroll by waiving a ton of players, and I don’t think it’s a bad move.Yes, that’s what it is. It’s also not even close to ditching 25% of your active roster in one day. It’s one reliever.
This thread is fueled by hyperbole
Next 10We keep winning but so do the Braves. Not making up much ground at the moment while we play these schlub teams.
Bench will be better tooLooking for the positives moving into next season. On July 6th the Cubs lost 7-0 to the Angels to drop to 41-49. In the 43 games since then they have gone 26-17 (~98 win pace). I'm also looking at three key guys for next year that have stepped in that time frame.
Dansby slashing .279/.349/.771
Amaya .358/.402/.992
PCA .244/.301/.768
That is a massive step up from two youngsters and rebound of form for Dansby. If those things are real, that's huge for next year. If you can get those young arms healthy and have a productive offseason, I'm feeling good going into next year.
Really should be DFA but they wont do that to him.Hendricks is so bad. He needs to be in the bullpen the rest of the season.
