***Official 2024 Chicago Cubs Thread***

So now we only get the pro-rated league minimum off his salary if he signs with someone else correct?

Smyly probably next.

I wonder just how close they are to going over the tax threshold as if they could cut a few more contracts and potentially have another team pick them up and save the pro-rated minimum there are a few more guys they could do this with and potentially get under that number. I don't know if they are just barely going to hit that and a couple more cuts could get them under or if it's a big enough number it's not going to matter if they cut more. Smyly probably would get picked up by a team needing bullpen help but you look at the rest of the roster and I don't think other cut candidates like Bote and Wisdom would get MLB contracts to finish the season if cut now. Tauchman possibly might but it's not a given, at this point barring an injury to a position player on a team in the playoff hunt the guys the Cubs could cut probably are no better than whoever they have in the minors they could just call up. At this point teams mostly are looking at MLB proven bullpen arms to take a chance on if they have a need this late in the year.

Can't wait to finish 'runner-up' on Soto this winter!!!!
Soto to Cubs would be great, but skeptical the Cubs will spend that much money on 1 free agent.

IMO the Cubs 2025 success isn't contingent on their signing 1 or 2 elite players. It's going to be based on re-tooling the offense, which means swapping out 4ish players out of the starting 9. It's about creating a different culture in the clubhouse, than solely adding talent.

If Bellinger doesn't opt out we won't even be in the process. Burnes is our home rum then trade Taillon.

Not sure the Cubs have much of a chance with Burnes if the Cubs don't re-tool the offense first. Not sure a 30 YO pitcher of his quality is going to sign onto a team with this Cubs offense. He's going to want a clear vision to a playoff team.

I also put Burnes in the Soto camp. Doubtful the Cubs are going to invest $35M+ annually in an elite pitcher.

It's easy to say that. Most elite players have multiple suitors so more teams fail than succeed. How do you plan to add Soto to an outfield with three $20mil + contracts and PCA? The only viable option to fix the offense is from within. They need to get back to 2023 production numbers. That upgrade needs to come from coaching.

Catcher is really the only viable exception.

The Iowa Cubs lineup is stacked tonight. Pretty wild when a guy with plenty of MLB experience in Trayce Thompson is batting 9th and has 20 HR’s on the year.

2023 Cubs weren't a playoff team and that's due to an inconsistent offense over 162 games.

Last year's Cubs offense was very flawed as well. My guess, if a baseball analytics person dropped the top 15% scoring games for each team- last years Cubs scoring average would have been in lower quarter of MLB.

The Cubs FO needs to create a new clubhouse culture. Maybe that can be done with different bench coaches and same players. But IMO that would just result in 2025 as another mediocre season. Sure existing contracts will make things complex, but there's more time to work through those issues during the winter trade period. And some nice players like Bellinger, Hoerner, Busch, Swanson, Happ or Suzuki will need to be moved. Despite being nice players or having no-trade clauses.

Cubs opening day bullpen:

Almonte - Out for season, injury
Alzolay - Out for season, injury
Cuas - DFAd
Leiter Jr. - Traded
Little - Out for season, injury
Merryweather - Out for most of season, pure dog **** since returning
Neris - DFAd
Smyly - Positive

I think the FO puts a show on for Soto to make the fan base happy but has zero intent of being serious about it.

I think the two big offseason moves will be Burnes and Alonso.

I do not want Alonso. But I think the idea of Alonso might have something to do with Busch wrongfully platooning.

Why do umps hate Seiya Suzuki? He has to lead the Majors for balls called strikes.
I am so ready for robot umpiring. It's so ridiculous how some of these umps have such an inconsistent strike zone. Angel Hernandez retiring at least got one of the worst umps out of the game but still have a long ways to go to improve the ball/strike calls of umpires.

Actually he is number 2 in balls being called strikes.
