***Official 2024 Chicago Cubs Thread***

And Hector gives up 3 runs (so far) in the 9th to allow Blue Jays to tie it up.
I sure hope they are able to limit his usage down the stretch so his player option won't kick in and we are stuck with him at $9 mil next year. Another mistake by Jed that could bite us. Guessing there were not many teams interested him in the deadline because of this because he would not be a rental pitcher with the usage they would need to get out of him to make a playoff push. I'm still seething from the report we likely will go over the luxury tax this season when all he needed to do was basically give away someone like Smyly and all that we needed to do was make sure the team he went to took on enough of his salary to keep the Cubs comfortably under the tax threshold.

Neris is 15 appearances or 13 game finishes away from the option kicking in. It also is void if he’s on the IL for game 162.

Giving him a 15 day IL blister probably saves you from running into a problem. I just do not think Jed or Clownsell are smart enough to figure out how to avoid the $9 MM.

I would think unless he has a legit injury sending him to the IL at the end of the season is going to result in a complaint filed by the player's union on his behalf that that Cubs put him on the IL without a real injury to avoid the option year kicking in. There are 39 games left in the season so it's going to be tough to keep him from hitting those 2 marks without actively sitting him for multiple days at a time. He's appeared in 45 of the 123 games so far which is .366 if the game so over 39 games if he's used at that rate he'll appear in 14.27 more games which is 15 so they need to steer clear of putting him into games when its already been decided even if he's had rest and the other options have not. It's easy to avoid the 13 finishes as you just don't put him in a save situation each time but for now you have to hope maybe he gets a legit IL stint that helps this situation else both Counsell and the FO need to be on the same page to not over-use him down the stretch.

We need hector to slip in a hot tub or sneeze too hard and throw out his back.
I think my all-time favorite injury has to be Felix Pie and the "twisted testicle." I tried not to laugh as it sounds painful and he had to have surgery for it but it was definitely a WTF moment on how you get that kind of injury.

He's a solid set up guy or at least he was but definitely not a closer. Not sure why they don't waive him because there is no way they want him.back at 9 mil. Still could save 2.1 which sounds like enough to get under the cap.

He would have to go on waivers, and no one is picking up that contact.

Feel like Lopez and Hodge have shown enough that they should at minimum share closing responsibilities with Neris.

Merryweather is probably the key to limiting Neris appearances. If control of his breaking pitches improves with innings, he can fill an 8th inning role. But right now seems like Merryweather is a 6th/7th inning guy.

Rogers confirms that the option doesn't automatically vest which is totally different than what he said last week.

Methinks Hector might have a terrible agent.

This team isn't making the playoffs even with or without him so if this is how you make sure his option doesn't vest good move. Surprised there is not some kind of implication with the option but surely they made sure if they cut him.
