***Official 2024 Chicago Cubs Thread***

After sitting on it, my working theory is that Jed was told we still have to have a winning product in 2024 both for his job AND for Marquee subscriptions.

Who is gone in the next 6 hours?

Who I want (and is possible) in order: Neris, Smyly, Taillon, Lopez, Tauchman, Wisdom, Hoerner

Who I think, in order of Jed's thoughts:

Neris - Saves $9 MM, assuming a team won't use him as a closer. I could even see Jed covering this years entire salary just to make sure he's safe next year.

Tauchman - Opens the door for Caissie

A 2B - Because we have too many. May wait until offseason.

Taillon - Saves $18 MM next year which can help lead to TWO stars with what you already have.

Speific trade thought:

Taillon + 2B + Lopez or Neris to Yankees for Jasson Dominguez.
I was thinking Taillon Alcantara for Dominguez. Gives the Yanks a legit OF prospect in return. We'd have a future of Caissie PCA and Dominguez. Suzuki could be 4th OF primary DH. Still going to assume Bellinger will opt out until he doesn't.

Something tells me Belli is the type of guy who performs better in contract years. I think he returns next year but has a great year (a la last year) and opts out and re-ups elsewhere.

If he does he may get traded in the offseason.
Maybe. If I’m a betting man (I am…total degenerate) if he isnt traded today, he will be part of 2025 unless next season goes sideways.

Financially, they can outbid any team for Soto or Burnes as is and then some.

Only reason you’d trade a Belli is if you plan on making a push for both and didn’t make enough moves TODAY to save for 2025.

You trade him if you want to infuse some youth. Stuck with Happ and Suzuki although I believe Suzuki has played his way into 4th OF/DH. If you trade for Dominguez you're going to play him pretty much everyday next year. ( I'd still rather get the C from Boston)

I’m hoping for an elite pitching prospect back. I’m not sold on Horton, he is injury prone and has really only thrown a handful of solid starts in his college/professional career. I don’t see a 10+ year MLB starter.

If you aren't sold on Horton you're not going to be happy with any pitching prospect we'd get for Taillon.

And where exactly are you getting injury prone?

I don’t disagree but Jed isn’t in a position right now where he can infuse some youth.

Worst case scenario Caissie gets the year to learn and not be thrown into a “must start and must perform” role, which has been a Jed issue

For the record, I think Horton is a solid pitcher but banking next year on him being a #2/3 is a stretch. He hasn’t shown any durability in his career.

From a financial stand point, there is zero reason Jed can't have a rotation of Burnes/Steele/Sasaki/Imanaga and then letting Wicks/Horton/Brown battle out for the 5th spot. Healthy for inning limitations, too.

I wouldn't think you'd need to protect Cowles. There's lots and lots of those guys and no one is keeping a guy like that on the 26 for the full year.

Given what Rogers AND Kikuchi were valued, seems like Jed either dropped the ball on Taillon or straight up refuses to trade him because he’s afraid of losing his job

I think the offense is a bigger long-term issue than pitching, so I'd rather see them throw $500M at Soto and move Seiya to DH. As currently constructed, this team has four lineup spots that provide below average to way below average offensive production (C, SS, 2B, CF). It's either get Soto, or go for big offensive upgrades at 2B and C. (Dansby and PCA aren't going anywhere.)

None of the young guys aside from Assad has given any indication that they can fill a role in the rotation on a consistent basis. That's why the FO is reluctant to deal Taillon IMO.

I think its a fair thought, but the contract situations are much different.

And who knows, maybe he still gets dealt.

Depending on the potential buyer Tallion's contract could be a plus because he's not a rental he's got 2 more years of control at a reasonable price for what pitching has been costing in free agency and even in prospect capital this week too. I just hope if there is a good deal on the table Jed doesn't pass on it. I'm fine keeping him too if there isn't a good offer for him. The hitting is what the Cubs need multiple upgrades at one way or another. Will be interesting to see if they have any more deals left to make before the deadline as there are still pieces on the roster that can be moved even if it's more of a money saving thing with less return back in prospects.
