***Official 2024 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Don’t worry everyone. We’ll get to listen to the FO talk about how much we’re going to spend this offseason, only for them to cry poor after anyone worth a **** signs a huge deal

What happened to the Cubs, a couple of years ago they had all those great prospects that were just tearing it up in AA and AAA, but now they are getting little or no production from any of them it seems.
2 years ago at AA and AA.
Mervis wasn't a high prospect he just powered his way on the list. Canario is m/l the same. Davis was but he got hurt. Not sure who would of been a sure thing 3 years ago.

He was like the 7th best player on a World Series team and he rode that and a nice head of hair into an absurdly inflated deal.
He's a 4-5 WAR player. His deal isn't what's hurting them. It's the fact that they refuse to bid on actual superstars.

The horrible roster construction has put him into a spot where he's set up to fail. He's not the guy that is going to carry the offense. If they wanted that at short, they should've paid the money to get Seager or Turner but Jed thinks he's running the big market Pirates and that he's the smartest guy in the room by doing it.

Good analysis. Something that struck me tonight and I’d consider another knock on Jed.

You’re paying $27 MM/year for a defense first SS and it seemed organizationally your entire philosophy was focused on defense last year. That’s why Yan came in and they let Contreras go, it’s why Madrigal played as much 3B he did. You very clearly traded offense for elite defense.

Then you commit to a guy like Morel who has you on the edge of your seat every ball hit his way and it completely shifts the entire organizational philosophy.

Ross left me scratching my head sometimes last year, especially during the late season collapse.. but this team has absolutely disintegrated under Counsell.

Radio pundits pointed to his record with the Brewers in close games, but I always wondered, isn’t a bunch of that just having a good closer? And here we are.
It's a front office and talent evaluation problem at this point. Counsel had a roster on Milwaukee that he could deploy guys in situations and win. The current Cubs roster does not have guys that can come up with a key hit or get an out with the game on the line.

I can't see the prospect return being much for guys mentioned. Anyone could of signed Bellinger to deal he ultimately received this past offseason and they didn't. He hasn't been bad by any means but also not great. I don't see teams offering a whole lot. Tallion is having a solid year but he's inconsistent and makes over 20 million a year. I think if we deal these guys it's going to be mostly shedding payroll. That's disappointing

Currently have $164 MM committed to next year.

Cut Neris, Smyly, and Bote, you have $142 MM committed.

Trade Happ, Belli, and Taillon, you have $78 MM committed to next year.

CBT will be at $241. You create a pretty sexy spot for a potential new president.

Tailion makes $18 mil a year and has 2 years left. Not a terrible contract for the production he's had since the 2nd half of last season. All 3 guys won't net a big return unfortunately and Happ has. NTC he'd had to waive too which complicates things.

I thought Tallion was just over 20 million. You're correct. I agree too

GM ISUCubswin deadline plans

- Trade cost-controlled Hoerner, Mervis, and Canario to the Jays for Vlad
- Trade Taillon to the Orioles for McDermott
- Trade Happ to best offer of any team he’d go to just to free up the money and the position

This offseason I am not getting outbid for Burnes or Soto and finding the next Tyler Glasnow random trade candidate and getting that guy, too.

Don’t think he’s ever led off at AA but the idea of going Shaw/Soto/Vlad/Belli/Suzuki/Busch/Swanson/Jansen/PCA is appealing.

I would love that first bullet but I don't think there's anyway that's the Jays best offer for Vlad

Thought that too. My one thing stopping me is he’s a 1.5 year rental and the Blue Jays are looking to get rid of Bo and/or Vlad because they are likely to leave, but Hoerner is a cheap, cost controlled option at a position of need, which I thought might be sexy. Could probably make it whatever OF prospect they want apart from Caissie, I don’t want to lose him

Watching the Cubs is a big part of my summer when I’m not doing anything else but I think tonight will be the last one I watch for awhile. 2 hits and 2 walks against a minor league pitcher with an ERA in the mid 4’s. The team is so broken it’s unreal
