***Official 2024 Chicago Cubs Thread***

This team reminds me of so many late 70s Cubs teams. They'd tease you for awhile early in the season, but by June it became obvious the talent wasn't there to be a genuine competitor. From there to September you watch a few guys having hot streaks, debate a couple of (always ill-advised) deadline deals, and in the end, get your panties in a bunch about whether they can finish at .500 or not. Ugh, I've seen this movie too many times.

Waiting on the Cyclones and the start of fall semester I guess.

I need help understanding Brennen Davis. He was a top 3 prospect in the system for 3 years after getting drafted but injuries bumped him all the way back to the 23rd prospect in the Cubs organization. His scout grade went from 60 to 55 to 45 and is now at 40. When healthy, he is still a top 5 player in the organization and needs a shot in the bigs.

He sure is on a tear at the moment. The problem is any OF they call up right now is not going to get regular playing time with 5 other guys in the OF mix.right now. Even if you move Bellinger to mostly 1B they'd still be the 5th OF. I think Davis is making a case for a look in the big but I fear he'd get the same treatment Canario got if he does.

The way things are going this team will probably play 2 guys short all weekend and then IL one or both of Suzuki and Hoerner on Monday (Reds sweep obvs). Then they’ll call up Mastro and Mervis. It’s seriously a total sh*tshow right now.

I’m feeling a little feisty about this team today. Last night really pissed me off. Just horrible execution of simple stuff and a waste of a great start by Steele. It seems like this team just has zero edge. A bunch of nice guys who work hard but have no killer instinct whatsoever. Counsell is a good manager but he might be a bad fit for this group. Steady can be good but I don’t think any of these guys actually need a steady presence. They’ve all got that mastered.

Why we keep putting Whiffdom in the leadoff spot is mind boggling. Hom and Morel at the top of the lineup today is just brutal. If Nico goes on the IL bring up Vazquez and give him the starts at 2B every day for awhile. Time to shake some things up. Calling up Davis is a logical move too but like I said earlier it would likely be a waste to do so as don't see where the AB come from unless you bench some regulars.

If they flame out this year I think a change needs to be made.
Part of me wants to make a move sooner than later. Last thing we need is his bum ass trying to make a big move to save his job and it not working out.

Bottom line, the philosophy of getting a bunch of mid-tier, low ceiling players who are wildly inconsistent their entire careers is not a recipe for success.

I don't know. Middling players could capture some real magic and, well, no, they can't.
We've got the team they were willing to build.

God forbid this organization risks overpaying for a superstar ever. I mean they’ll overpay for a slightly above average player who’s a “great clubhouse guy” because that still isn’t that much $$$. The Ricketts treat their fans like idiots.

No panic from me. This team wasn’t built to win. No sense delaying the inevitable.
I guess I was naive since we looked like a playoff team last year until that epic collapse the last couple weeks.

I thought with everyone returning, some of the prospects making it to the majors, and Counsell being a huge upgrade over Ross that we'd make a similar jump from 2014 to 2015. Instead it seems like we are going opposite direction.

I thought that too man. I didn’t mean to imply that I saw this coming. It’s becoming obvious in hindsight, though, that the FO needed to add another piece at least. If you’ve got a group that plays sloppy D and fails to make simple baseball plays on a daily basis then you need some thump.
