Will they put him on the 60 day IL opening up a 40 man spot? I'm not sure of the pros/cons of it.

We just need to go to having a computer call, balls and strikes. You'll still need the umpire behind home plate, they just wouldn't call balls and strikes anymore.
I like the system AAA has in place right now. If you have been to an Iowa Cubs game in the past 2 years the challenges on pitches usually are overturned more times than they are upheld. Especially when a batter challenges immediately he knows he saw a pitch that was not a strike. Can't wait for MLB to adopt some form of this as it will take care of a lotnof these umpire issues that don't have a consistent strike zone.

Cubs not getting many breaks. Was hoping Mastro or Madrigal would play well enough in DSM to create some trade interest. Could be nice pieces in package to add a catcher.
There was no way either was going to be part of a meaningful trade. They are DFA candidates on a lot of teams.

Kinda seems like the Cubs aren’t competing for anything this year. The bats have perked up a little but the starting pitching has come back to earth and the bullpen is still one of the worst in the league. All kinda adds up to “under .500”.

I would assume so because even if he's ready before 60 days, he can play in AAA games on a rehab assignment any time after 45 days.
May as well but who do you add to the 40 man right now? It's not like there is a guy in the minors that is making a case for a call up. Merryweather may be ready to cone off the IL in July and he's on the 60 day so that would be the 1 move made when they have to activate him.

Carl Edwards hasn't given up a hit in his last 9 appearances with 11 Ks and 3 walks.

Jed's aversion to spending on the bullpen makes freaking Carl Edwards a viable option...

Anybody know if Canario and Alcantara have any shot at being good? We are 3 years removed from all those trades and so far all we have to show for it is PCA who can't hit.

Some of these guys should be contributing by now. I said it back then and I'm saying it now, we got alot of garbage trades for all those World Series guys.

Madrigal and Heuer were total busts for Kimbrel. They gave away Joc Pederson for a bucket of batting practice balls that year. Guys like Killian have been total garbage. That's not even going back the previous year when we got 1 year of Zach Davies and trash prospects for Darvish.

You would think 3-4 years later at least 1 of those guys would be making an impact by now there's absolutely nobody contributing.

Canario has not been given a fair opportunity either time he has been called up. He's shown he can hit for power in Iowa but he rides the bench for pinch hits and rare starts when he's been in Chicago. Alcantara is probably a year away from a call up to Chicago. The problem is the best prospects in the system are OF but they are blocked by Happ Suzuki Tauchman Bellinger and now PCA. Cassie Canario and Alcantara have shown they can hit for power but until they find a path for them to get an opportunity in Chicago. I've said it here many times, the Happ extension with the no trade clause was a dumb move when they traded the core of the 2016 roster away to load up the farm system that would have several high end OF prospects. Caissie was the 1 guy in the Darvish trade that they hit on too.

At some point management has to make decide of these OF prospects are part of the future and clear a path for them to succeed or use them in trades to fill in other roster needs. Feels like the front office does not have a vision of where they see a path to success right now. Jkt making any bold trades or free agent signings while sitting on a farm system many think is one of the best in baseball.

Definitely not ready to make a run at anything worth a damn this season unfortunately. Phillies and Dodgers will have words with everyone else. Find a catcher, make moves in the bullpen this offseason and we have a chance.

This team is just so bad right now. The offense has to come around eventually?

Right now they look like a bad slow pitch softball team that pops up lazy fly balls to the outfield. They don't even make the defense work much.

I have resigned myself to the fact that the Cubs are at least 3 years out from competing for a WS. Happ and Swanson signings are going to hurt for awhile but maybe a shed of payroll somehow can open up some lanes for guys to play in the bigs everyday.

Damn. Amaya was so close. It’s seems like we hit balls hard but they go straight at people while everyone else’s hits land just out of reach of our out fielders. So frustrating.

Overall they arent making much solid contact. A few times a game they square something up like Amaya and Swanson tonight but overall it's not enough to string together a competent offense.

The situational hitting is also really poor. Bellinger had the bases loaded and immediately popped out to the 3rd baseman, then you have guys like Morel and Wisdom who refuse to adjust their swing when they need to make some contact.

I’ll be pretty annoyed if we buy any rentals this deadline. This is just not a good team. C/1B/3B are current jokes, you need two more starting pitchers if you want to be serious, and you have zero identified roles in your bullpen except 6 swing guys.
