***Official 2024 Chicago Cubs Thread***

If Craig disappears over the next 30 minutes I'm guessing he's meeting with the owner asking for his old job back.

Yes. The Cubs are a broken team in so many ways. Compared to what I see in the Brewers and their consistent, clutch play, we have a LONG way to go. Really sad.
No question the Brewers are a better team right now, but there were some encouraging things to take away from that series (not the bullpen which still needs fixing). Some of the guys’ bats are waking up. The organization is in great position to make some big moves. I think this divisional race still gets really interesting before it’s all said and done.

Last year the Cubs were bad in May, hopefully this is a repeat. Things haven't gone well the last few games.

I heard Kapman on KXNO yesterday talking with Ken Miller about potential trades with the Blue Jays who might be blowing things up and starting over. I wouldn't mind a hitter or bullpen guys coming over.

Cubs suck. I'm ready to throw in the towel and it's not even June. Let the kids sink or swim, trade off all the vets. And for gawd's sake, find a catcher that is useable.

The bats waking up a bit just gives the bullpen more opportunities to blow it

Honestly I hope they don't do what they did last year. This team isn't built to win. Don't get drug into the fools' gold of an early summer run like last year and wind up being buyers at the trade deadline.

Here's the problem offensively.

Happ is here through 26
Suzuki is too bit I think he will eventually be a big producer.
Bellinger isn't going to stay unless we win.
Swanson benefited from being in a monster lineup.
Hoerner and Tauchman are nice complimentary pieces but not much more.
Morel who knows
Busch you'd think but defense is weak
Gomes is going to retire and it's time.
Amaya hasn't shown anything.
PCA is the closest we have to a sure thing.

We can hope for guys like Shaw, Caissie, Alcantara, Davis, Vazquez, and Triantos but how are you going to open up spots?

The problem becomes that we're stuck in between. Makes zero sense to buy and we don't have any sellable assets that are going to generate a return that helps at all unless somebody just overwhelms you for Hoerner. Otherwise, you're trading minor pieces like Neris, Gomes (vet backup catcher for young team) and Tauchman and getting a lottery ticket back.

Just an inept job by Jed in putting a roster together (again).

Moving some of these pieces for a lotto ticket may open roster spots and opportunities for guys though. Agree we don't have too many tradable assets but we have an abundance of guys that don't fit into the long term picture either that are blocking guys from opportunities. Tauchman is one of those guys, you may not get a big piece back for him but it opens an OF spot on the roster. Madrigal and Wisdom are just taking up bench spots too. At some point if things don't trend in the right direction either need to trade or cut pieces that aren't part of the long term plan and start committing time to prospects to see if they are going to be part of the solution. We already wasted some time calling up Vasquez and not using him while Madrigal and Wisdom still got more of the opportunities he should have. Canario has had the same problem both times he's been up. At least it looks like they are finally ready to let PCA play regularly.

Hendricks and Smyly are 2 guys that won't be here next year too. There are some guys it's obvious are going to be here for awhile so have to decide who on the margins of the roster are keeping them from getting a look at someone and find a way to clear a path so they can.

I sometimes think guys in baseball really lose their edge once they reach free agency the first time and get really PAID. It is a long road to the majors and through arbitration years, but I feel like so many guys decline rapidly as soon as they get that 4-5 year deal for $80 million+, future family will never have to work type of money. Happ and Swanson seem to fit that narrative.

Bellinger with the perfect sac fly. too bad madrigal had such poor baserunning. did not see if the 3rd base coach threw up the stop sign or not

Obviously a bad send by Willie and he rightfully taking the heat for the situation… but holy hell Madrigal adds literally nothing to this team. Bad hitter, his OPS is over 150 points worse than the MLB average. And his Baseball Savant page ranks him as one of the worst defensive third baseman (mostly due to his lack of range) and a horrible baserunner. As @Rabbuk once stated, the idea of Nick Madrigal is so much better than he actually is.

I thought I saw someone waving arms to keep running so put the blame on that person. you are right about bellinger and the sac fly but then maybe the pitcher throws different and he does not hit the sac fly. will never know will we.
