***Official 2024 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Dansby with the clutch homer. Good to see. Glad they finally pulled one out that looked like it was headed south fast.

My first Cubs game at Wrigley in over a decade tonight. We waited out the 3 hour delay behind the bleachers and stayed until the end. That was a freaking blast! There wasn’t a big crowd but it was a rowdy one let me tell ya.

Did they sell beer the whole time?

That would’ve been a fun experience. Beats the 3-0 loss to the Braves I went to last week

Curious move. Is Madrigal finally done? I doubt he'd get claimed but he might want to look for better opportunity elsewhere.

A career .231 hitter will be the answer to all of our offensive problems. Whatever they end up doing with Madrigal whether it be optioned or DFA'd will be a net positive. The guy has no business getting this many innings in the majors.

Unless someone is going to the 60 day someone is getting dropped from the 40 man. The article infers possibly Azolay to the 60 day but if that is not the move likely Madrigal or Mastrobuoni gets DFA. I think it's likely Madrigals spot that Bote takes one way or the other.

Going to be interesting who goes off the 40 man when they have to activate someone from the 60 day. By that time I'd assume it will all work itself out and there will be 1 or 2 guys that have run out of chances. Madrigal and Mastrobuoni in particular seem to fit that narrative at this point.

Little is a guy that could use some time down. His balance is all over the place at release.
Hendricks time is ticking.
Not sure on the 3rd but we could use Wicks, Almonte and Merryweather.

Palencia and Thompson are obviously depth guys that will ride the shuttle (i 80).

Where I think the Cubs should go from here - building a decent team to finish this **** show of a season and firing Hoyer and bringing in someone from a non-poverty franchise.

Building for a team in 2025 -

C - Call the Rockies and grab one of their catchers. Neither are gigantic trash cans at the plate, both on final year of their deals, see if they’d be a good get for 2025

1B - ***** boy Hoy has handcuffed us but this needs to be Bellinger.

3B - Still hate banking on Morel but analytics show he’s been terribly unlucky.

SP - Trade for Luzardo. Get Burnes in the offseason. Certified studs, and allows you to stack the bullpen.

Need to sell off some contracts though. Taillon seems the guy others would be interested in that we'd be willing to part with.

I agree. I'd love to find a way to sell off Taillon and convince Happ to waive his NTC to go to a contender to free up $40 MM.

We do have something crazy like $88 MM available before any of our pre-arb players get paid. And then an extra $15 MM when you cut Smyly and Bote, and possibly another $9 MM depending on what they want to do with Neris.

I just think a Burnes/Luzardo/Imanaga/Steele/Horton rotation is filthy and undoubtedly a top 5, World Series caliber starting rotation, and it would be incredibly inexpensive outside of Burnes. Also frees up Wicks/Brown/Wesneski to serve in the bullpen.

Either way, this team is NOT a championship-level team, so my hope is that we head into the deadline with 2025 in mind. Not 2024, not 2027, but 2025. Your fanbase doesn't deserve this pile of **** they keep getting fed.

I'd also like a focus on a high floor bat. Right now, Bellinger is the only guy on the roster who day in, day out you know can put up a competitive at bat. Suzuki, Happ, Morel, your C's, Swanson are all capable of being automatic outs at the plate, and when multiple of them are on the same cycle, you are putting an uncompetitive team on the field.
