I saw Luis Vazquez got traded to the Orioles for cash. Wish he would have gotten some time over Mastrobuoni last year.

Been meaning to comment on this one. I'm disappointed he was not given a fair shot last year when he was up with the big league team. He definitely was a plus glove defensively but he never got any kind of playing time even though he hit fairly well in Iowa the past 2 seasons. Would have been a cheap and optionable utility infielder. The Cubs have done a terrible job lately giving some of their position prospects playing time at the big league level other than PCA. Vazquez got just 12 AB in 11 games last year, Canario has only got 42 AB in 21 games the past 2 years and both these guys were hitting well in Iowa before they were called up to warm the bench while we let Madrigal, Wisdom, Mastrobuoni, and other bums get plenty of opportunity even though the all stunk for long stretches.

I'm really curious to see what the plans are for Caissie and Alcantara as we may as well trade 1 or both now before they lose trade value like Canario already has. There aren't going to be a lot of AB available with Happ, PCA, and Tucker as the everyday OF and Suzuki the primary DH and occasional start in RF. Canario has to win a spot in spring training as he is out of options otherwise they have to trade or release him and they won't get much in return if that is the case. Happ and Suzuki are signed through 2026 with NTC so even if Tucker is not resigned there is still a bit of a logjam in the OF until the 2027 season.

Kind of surprised by this. PECOTA win projections have Cubs as the 3rd highest win projection in the League.

On paper Cubs have a solid roster. Have to execute.

Brasier move just screams Cubs have one more eye popping move.

Bregman gives you a top 3 lineup in the NL and I’m assuming they’ll be hunting for a SP the first half of the year.

Cease gives you a top 5 rotation in the NL, but you don’t give Shaw any safety net

My guess is if Bregman signs, it’ll be for around $28M AAV with loads of opt outs.

If it occurs, Nico + ? Is traded for a SP.

I've bought two Cubs jerseys in the last 2 years, each time thinking "this is definitely a guy they'll hold on to for a decade".

Addison Russell
Nico Hoerner

No more jerseys.

The rando Twitter Lisa who has nailed a couple signings says Bregman is done.

Don't trade Nico unless you get a legitimate front of the rotation pitcher. He's too valuable as an insurance policy for Shaw just to give away.

Unsure of validity but figured I’d throw it in here

Speculation is the Hoerner deal would be with the Yankees or Mariners as the top suitors. While SP has been the obvious grab, there’s some belief that the Cubs are also looking into prospects and/or draft picks, I’m assuming so they can continue building the farm and put a package together for a star SP in June/July

Dubuque
Happ LF
Tucker RF
Suzuki DH
Bregman 3B
Busch 1B
Swanson SS
PCA CF
Amaya C
Shaw 2B

That'll play.

I could see the above lineup if Hoerner is not a Cub or still dinged when the season opens.

But if the Cubs hope to get full value for Hoerner at the trade deadline, I feel he has to start at 2B and fill in for Swanson at SS.

What role does that leave for Shaw? Play 2nd when Hoerner & Swanson sit. Maybe Shaw plays 3rd when Bregman sits. I am hopeful Counsell takes a load management approach with Hoerner, Swanson & Bregman. Don't play them in the field once a week- that would still be around 136 position starts during the season. They can always get bats at DH if they are on fire with the stick.

IMO that could mean 2-3 starts a week for Shaw, playing around 60-70 games a season and get Shaw 250+ at bats his rookie year, even if Hoerner doesn't get traded. That seems like a low pressure way to bring Shaw along.

I'd be thrilled if they land Bregman as he's a sure thing at 3B right now which has been a black hole for the last several years. Shaw might be the future but with only 1 garunteed year of Tucker and what they gave up to get him you have to put a roster on the field that can compete in 2025.
