***Official 2024 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Does this team ever drive the ball? It's been a couple weeks since I've watched a game and it's the same old weak contact and slow pitch softball pop-ups to the outfield. At least make the defense work a little.

Basallo is still just 19 and growing. They think he will possibly end up at 3rd base. If you trade him early his value is higher as a catcher than first base obviously. I think they would have to be blown away with a trade that included players that can contribute now or within this current rosters next year-2025.

The good/bad to Elias is he feels like he has to win every trade. I think that stalls quite a bit of action. Things should be close to even when pulling trades off but thats not how he sees it. He does have a good track record but i think teams are starting to catch on too. Why does Mike want to make this deal so badly??

Sounds like trading with Jed is the answer to his dreams.

Miles, Amaya, and PCA have to be the worst bottom of the order in the majors.
This, and add in that there is nobody on this roster except (maybe?) Michael Busch that should be hitting in the top 4 of a truly competitive lineup.

PCA, Swanson, Amaya, Mastro, Nido, Morel are all best in 8/9 spots.

Happ, Suzuki, Hoerner are all best in 5-7 spots.

It is really crazy how badly this team is constructed when you actually have to set it into a lineup. I completely embrace and believe in analytics as an extremely helpful tool but blind, total reliance on them gives you a team like this.

It's hard to explain how a team of basically the same players went from one of the top offensive teams in the league to one of the worst. Can all but guarantee we'll see coaching changes this winter.

Madden got fired because he felt the organization was forcibly removing the human element to lineup and in-game decisions

Ross’ blind following of what the computers spit out led to his downfall

While I 100% believe many changes need to be made with management, I also believe it starts with a complete overhaul of the analytical infrastructure and philosophy.

I truly believe a lot of the decisions we made are solely because it’s what the computer said, and not because of what’s obvious. Busch not starting or getting pinch hit for when a lefty is throwing is about the dumbest thing in the world, yet we still continue with the ******** because it’s what the computer says.

I don't know how you can develop players to be able to hit certain type of pitching if you don't allow them to face it. Doesn't that kind of skew the data a bit too if you sit certain guys because you don't think they can hit pitching from a certain side? It limits the sample size thus skews the data a bit you'd think. If you are a good player you should be in the lineup nearly every day regardless who is on the mound. By saying you won't start a certain guy against left handed pitching then you aren't helping their development. I am not saying discard analytics entirely but can't let it dictate how you run a team. Look at Moneyball as an example, on paper it looks good from analytics angle but on the field talent still wins games.

Sort of like Ross saying the computers didn’t like Canarios matchups as the reason for him never playing last year.

He was raking in AAA last year when he got called up. How can a computer possibly tell you not to give him any opportunities?

Nate Pearson is a Cub via Toronto.

Elite velocity, high k’s, low BBS. But gives up a lot of homeruns which I’m guessing means he doesn’t have much run, which seems to be something Hottovey specializes in.

My $$$ is they try getting him to be a late inning guy.

Gave up Pinango (#29 prospect, OF) who isn’t bad but never would’ve played for us given our glut of outfielders

He's likely a precursor to up coming departures.

This list must of been made by a complete idiot.
My 3 untouchables
Steele
Imanaga
Horton

I would tend to agree with your list of 3 starting pitchers. Usually a good starting rotation is a great place to build a roster around.

There should be NO bat on this roster that isn't open to trade discussions. Mainly because this group of position players makes for a terrible lineup. Hoerner would be near the top of my trade list because he should have value AND the minor league pipeline is filled by Vazquez, Shaw and Triantos. Sure Shaw is currently playing 3B at AA, but I have my doubts if he has the slug to play 3B in Chicago. Especially when the current roster is so deficient in HR power.

I would agree with some comments on blind adherence to analytics by FO. But I was expecting Counsell to have a better feel for the game and lineups.

Hendricks is a great example. He's beyond letting him work through trouble. When things go back for Kyle, they go bad fast and big. Once he gets through the line-up 1x and gives up a few hits, call on the bullpen. It's not like Counsell is trying to build up an unproven pitchers confidence.

Are we sure Horton is ready for 2025? He seems to have the top prospect curse written all over him (Brennen Davis, Brailyn Marquez, etc).
