Remember it well……. Living in rural Iowa outside of Boone. Power went out while my mom was in the middle of making my birthday cake. Was out for 3-4 days. No school. Parents had a scheduled trip to Vegas, so they left town and my aunt came over from ISU (also no classes - may have been spring break, can’t remember) to babysit us.
Out in the country it was quite eerie as it was quiet with no heat or no hot water and the occasional crash of limbs falling onto the roof from a large silver maple that was next to the house.
After a several days of that we went to DSM to stay with my uncle and his family as they finally got power back. Next time you drive down 141 heading to Grimes look off to the south and notice the heavy duty metal power lines. In 1990 after that storm they were all down. and when I say down lines, metal supports, everything, laying flat on the ground. The weight of the ice was so heavy it toppled them like dominoes for over 20 miles. Made the front page of the Register one of those days.
