***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

It was said by a lot of people when announced but Smyly starting tonight was pretty indefensible when you’re in a division race. I think just about everyone would rather see an unknown go vs. a guy you almost for sure know will not even be able to get you five innings with an already gassed bullpen. Put Smyly back in the pen and give Wesneski or a AAA guy a chance

Send him to bullpen

I'd be in favor of Wesneski getting the start against Pittsburgh on Sunday and then make your roster adjustments as you head into September.
Wesneski has stuff that would make him a good middle of the rotation guy. He's struggled with his command at times and makes a big mistake that sometimes ruins his outing when he starts. Steele was a bit of the same way when he first came up and worked it out so hoping with some confidence Wesneski can do the same eventually.

Well so much for Smyly going back to the bullpen yet

It Doesn't Sound Like David Ross is Eager to Move Drew Smyly Back Into the Bullpen - Bleacher Nation

Don't like this line because that is just not true: “Who takes his spot in the rotation, is the question,” Ross said when asked if it was time to consider a more permanent move to the bullpen for Smyly, per the Sun-Times. “He’s in there because we’re just a little short-handed right now. It’s his first start back; let’s give him a little bit of grace. And I don’t know that we have anybody waiting in line that we feel like is some dominant force.”

Ummm when Smyly himself admits he got tired in the 4th inning you have guys like Wesneski, Kilian, and Jordan Wicks you could give a chance to and Ben Brown when he's healthy better get a look in September. Wesneski and Kilian have had their struggles too but can't be any worse than the starts Smyly has had lately and at the very least you give one of those guys a chance to work on some things at the MLB level because they have pitched decent in AAA this year. Or at the very least have one of them ready to piggyback on a short start and be able to give you 3 or 4 innings when you have pull Smyly out early.

I guess he's learned to keep Wisdom away from 1st. I still have no idea why his .194 against lefties is so indispensable, but whatever. I can't quite figure out what Wisdom gives us that Mervis wouldn't but hey, what do I know...

It sounds like Ross is probably keeping Smyly in the rotation which is an absolute abomination.

I see that Mervis and Canario homered on consecutive pitches last night. Hell just about anyone in Iowa right now would be an improvement over Wisdom at this point. His splits from the last 30 days:

21 AB
5 hits, 3 were HR
0 BB
10 SO

So he's striking out on nearly half of his limited at bats right now and is a defensive liability when he plays the field so why is he still on the big league roster for a team making a playoff push right now?

JD on the broadcast suggesting it doesn't matter where guys bat in a lineup, totally ridiculous. I honestly think that Marquee/Cubs management would consider doing what the O's did to their announcer if they were to say anything too critical about the players and/or questioning of Ross and his lineup decisions. Guys like Harry Carry wouldn't exist in today's "don't offend anyone" environment, sigh.

Taillon goes up 0-2 and throws a fastball down the pipe. Hopefully it's not the start of him losing it as he's been fantastic today.

Now a weak grounder that finds a hole.

JFC. Based loaded and nobody out. Not only need the win but could (have) used Taillon making it 7 today.

Arrgh! Giving up a grand slam after 5 solid innings.

Obviously hindsight, but Taillon was struggling with his control in the 6th and Ross should have been happy to get 2 outs and then rely on reliever to get Carpenter out.

Of ******* course. If we end up losing this game, or even winning while having to torch the pen, that's a really bad result. Taillon needs to man the **** up and not miss his spots by 5 feet.
