***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Sounds like 2023 top pick Shaw is already ready for AA. I wondering if they'd consider Nico (has the better arm) at 3B? Because this kid could be ready mid-season next year.

Hoping he's the real deal but he's going to need a fair run in AA and AAA before being called up. It's pretty rare for someone to not even spend a full season in the minors after being drafted and be ready for the big leagues so unless he just chews up AA and AAA pitching next year a callup in 2024 is probably a reach. Gotta take Brett at BN with a grain of salt sometimes as he can get a little too excited and over the top with his writings. He could probably sell you on about any prospect in the system after they had a big game or good stretch of games to write about.

Wild idea—-could Ian Happ play 1st base? He’s played about a dozen or so games there in his career and came up as a 2B/3B prospect. Obviously, I’d want to re-sign Bellinger but having Happ at 1B could break up the logjam that exists/is coming in the OF. Caissie is red hot, PCA is less than a year out, and guys like Canario, Perlaza, and Brennen Davis (if he is ever healthy) have potential in the OF.

I don't think they make a position Happ can't play.

Full year, that's why I said mid-season 2024.

I think Mervis will be more productive then Happ next year.

I get what you're saying, but at this point I don't think Happ is a guy you rework positions/orders around. With the competition in the outfield, if he can't produce enough to keep his spot he's trade bait. And I think we've seen at times how harmful a non 1st baseman playing 1st base can be.

Agree, wouldn't mind seeing Tauchman everyday next year in LF or minimum platooning there with Suzuki. (PCA in CF, Bellinger in right.) We've got Canario, Cassie and The Jaguar moving up quickly so Happ hasn't produced well enough to hold those guys back.

Full no-trade clause and yearly salaries of $21 mil, 21, and 19 from 2024-2026 may make that a tougher task than you think. It was dumb to extend him when they did.

They say each WAR is worth $6.8M so, by that definition, he's compensated right where he should be. He on pace to be just over 3 this year after 3.6 last year. He's making the going rate...

There is not a reason on earth that someone not named Cody Bellinger or Jeimer Candelario should see another start at 1st for the rest of the year. It's managerial malpractice to put anyone else there.
Locked On Cubs brought up a great point - August 3rd Rossy said it’s go time and he would be putting forth his best lineup the rest of the year.

You can not tell me yesterdays lineup, especially with 2 off days the next 4 days; was the best lineup Ross could put forth.

Ive said it before and I’ll say it again, Ross is a great clubhouse guy, but has to be one of the worst strategist in the league.

And I'm willing to bet you'll say it again even if he gets us to the WS.

Probably, but I’d also bet money if Counsel is our manager, we’re already in first. He has objectively cost us too many games in this season.
90% of our loses are from starting pitching laying a turd. Waiting to put Stroman on IL was a FO call. Not getting a lefties for the pen is FO and will cost us dearly in the playoffs. I'm not saying he's not without blame but he's not as bad as you're convinced he is.

I don’t think not getting a lefty will cost us - Mark Leiter can handle those duties just fine. My guess is they also had an inkling Smyly would eventually move to the pen, but he also isn’t effective against lefties.

The lineup construction and bullpen mismanagement has been bad all year. Starting pitching has been terrible but we’re 18-8 since the Red Sox series. Shockingly, 7 of those 8 losses Tauchman didn’t start.

You also can’t look at Sundays lineup and believe that whoever composed that lineup took winning seriously given what was left on the bench. You also can’t look at what happened in game 3 against the Mets and think whoever was making those decisions was taking winning seriously.

Usage is an indication of playoff roster. Bench guys need to get some ABs if you want any chance of producing in the postseason. Madrigal and Wisdom played, Barnhart hasn't. My best guess is Killian and Barnhart don't make the cut replaced by PCA and Mervis.

We can't afford to throw games away and that's what we did Sunday. It had all the feel of "well we got the first 2, what the hell". Now I know Tailion wasn't good, but Wisdom's play at first didn't help. And when ever game counts, you cant afford to have Tauchman and Candelario sitting on the bench in favor of Madrigal and Wisdom. You just can't.
