***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

The false hope they gave fans in April was such a tease... Expectations in March were to be competent this year before they start the winning window (spending) in 2024.

The division is there to take, but I pray Jed and ownership don't sell the farm and try to win this year..
They won't sell the farm, they will add to it if they make trades this year. Will need to go on a run soon else they will sell off any pieces that are not in the long term plans.

Their decision to not invest in a closer this year is significantly backfiring. The “cobble the pen together with a bunch of marginal dudes” strategy is risky. It’s paid off for a few years, but this year far from it.

It's been their strategy for years. Grab some bullpen arms off the trash heap and hope a few over perform and we can sell them off at the deadline.

Why do I continue to watch a team with the resources of the Yankees and Dodgers that cries poor and acts like the Reds and Royals?

Ross just got extended, he's not going anywhere regardless of how awful he is and he is awful.

Kind of a good comparison of situation right now: How Safe is David Ross With the Chicago Cubs? (msn.com) It's a tough spot because I don't think anyone expected this team to start off like they did which probably gave fans a false sense of hope that this team was better than we thought. Long term I doubt Ross will be the guy that leads this group when the rebuild is done but for now he's probably got this season and possibly the start of next season for them to evaluate him. He's signed through 2024 with a club option for 2025.

The bullpen can't all be blamed on Ross, there has not been a lot of consistency there in terms of performance so who do you really trust other than Alzolay Leiter and Rucker right now and even they aren't that experienced at this level. Maybe Estrada gets more run with the injuries right now and holds a spot but guys they were counting on to be the high leverage guys in Thompson Hughes Boxberger and Fulmer have not been good so far. Then you have Taillon and Wesneski who have not performed well in the rotation either. I'm not optimistic that Hendricks will do much better when he's back but at this point gotta see what he has left in the tank.

And then there is the black holes in the lineup with Hosmer and Barnhart on a team that needs more offense. Will be interesting to see when Bellinger and Nico are both back in the lineup and healthy if having Mervis and Morel now in the mix if they can start to string together some hot streaks on offense but the roster in general is still lacking a couple of consistent power hitters in the middle of the order to make the bottom half a little more productive. Help is eventually on the way with the talent in the minors but I think it's becoming clear there may not be enough talent and experience on the big league roster yet to win the division even if the division is weak this year.

Rios isn't much of an upgrade offensively to Hosmer unfortunately and he was hitting just .190 since being sent down to Iowa. A little surprised Valazquez was not the call up for Bellinger over Tauchman especially since he is not on the 40 man so he'll have to be DFA when they are done with him as I don't see him being a long term call up.

DFA for Hosmer makes a lot of sense with Mevis and Mancini already on roster and their position flexibility limitations.

A little surprised about Keegan, but maybe they feel he needs consistent innings at Iowa to get his groove back.

Rios is a bit of a head scratcher, but maybe this is his last shot to catch fire before Bellringer comes off IL. If he doesn't hit, then DFA him.

Glad to see Bellinger take the baton from Bryant in the "small injury somehow leads to him being out for 3 months" department.

If only they could find a position he could play decent defense at.
Feel they need to find 1 position and keep him there. It can't be easy to play 3 or 4 positions over a 10 day period.

That said, seems like 3rd would be the only position he could supplant the current starter.

I feel like if I was making a depth chart he would somehow be #2 at like 6 different positions basically every defensive spot but 1st short and catcher and then add dh which I think honestly he could be our best option at.
