Unless you have a dirt floor in your basement, the water lined one is not a possibility, to my knowledge. They do have some electrical webbings that go under the carpet and pad. Of course that won't work if power goes out. You can probably get a decent generator (during the summer when prices are not as tough) and get the electrical stuff done for a couple thousand, if you have power outages much. Much cheaper if you feel comfortable doing any electrical work yourself and much more cheaper if you do it the way I did it but is not the way you are supposed to do it.

been very rare, cross fingers. my parents are end of the line with a farm and lost power frequently enough that they did buy a generator and have loved it. Spot where they'd had to hook the tractor up to the line to create power was right in the driveway so anytime milk truck could make it or needed to leave to feed cattle down the road, had to unhook and hook back up. Plus could only run 1 big thing at at time. So either run milk pump or mix feed, but not both.

Why not just floor it to get out of the driveway without cleaning it? Then clean the driveway later in the day or after work. Especially if it’s still snowing. And you have 24 hours to do the sidewalks too.

That’s what I just did to drop the kids off at daycare anyway. I’m not cleaning until it’s done snowing
I would, but something about my wife flooring it out the driveway terrifies me

How is wind and snow in eastern Iowa? Stuck in meetings for an hour but hoping to make a last grocery run at 11:30. 3rd time in 3 days, ridiculous. But we're going through stuff way faster than normal between sickness + kids at home. And don't plan to go back out til Tuesday. Plow came through our sub about 45 min ago, snowing pretty heavily now but very very light wind so I think the 7 min into town will be ok, especially once I get TO town. it's the sketchy N/S county road I need to get through.

Madison streets are crap. It was fine going up, but started to snow when I got there. Stopped at Hy-vee to get a couple things. Used the self checkout and didn't see the armed security guy. Coming back, someone on the other side of the beltline must have tried to use the closed flex lane and crashed into the wall.

You should be fine then I would think. We were in the same situation on the farm as you guys, except my dad quit dairy about when I was born so water for the cattle was the only concern. A neighbor a block east of us used to crank the heat up to around 88 when they heard the power could be lost. Then they always told us they felt tired and went to bed early. Probably because they were used to 70 degree weather and were sitting around in 88 degrees in the middle of winter.

the impetus was losing power for about 3 days during an ice storm winter of 2009? I think? 2009-2010. I was home on break. We lived at the top of a hill and it was so much ice you could sled down our gravel road and make it to the neighbor's a 1/4 mi down. Then had to walk back up via the ditch.

Good day to watch the Top Gun marathon on Paramount lol
Also, new season of "Jack Ryan" on Amazon Prime. Was not aware a new season was coming out until saw a blip advertisement on social media.

Yeah, I would never be able to live on gravel, grew up on blacktop. One site that CMJH oversaw was three miles of gravel and irritated me everytime I had to go there. A local dairy guy doesn't own a generator, I only know because during a bad ice storm a couple years ago, we lost power for about a week, and he called me to fill up a water tank for his cattle since he noticed I was about the only one with a yard light on at my site near him. My generator ran about 8-9 days straight that stretch since the power company knows I have a generator and basically repairs my stuff last. Have solar panels there now, so I don't know how much that will help or not during this type of stuff.

Reminds me of being happy not having a "posi" rear end but limited slip on my high school car. When the gravel road would get that bad.....the passenger side rear was on the grassy shoulder. The only way to make it.

Go....spin...catch....go...spin....catch....go. A few times where the 10 minute drive home from school took close to an hour.

Started watching that last night. Have two episodes done and not sure what I think of it yet. I'm not huge on subtitles and it has quite a bit. I watch when I use the treadmill and the little lifting I do so having to read during that sucks.

Did the driveway for the first time. I have a lot of ground to cover. With a few quick breaks to warm my hands it was bearable.

You forget how much cold like this just sucks the energy right out of you though. I have body aches already.

Snowblower won’t start, assuming it’s too cold. Hopefully warming it up helps, otherwise I’m gonna be scooping for awhile.

My parents did the built in generator a few years ago. Ironically after that big ice storm that took a week or so for power to get back on and after they got rid of the livestock. But it is nice knowing that they don't have to get the tractor running every time the power goes out. Of course, it doesn't stop my mom from freaking out every time they lose power.... ;)
