Because I think it is a damn near guarantee many of us will be in one on Thursday night/Friday here is the criteria for a blizzard warning. Big note-it has nothing to do with amount of snow fallen, it is wind speed and visibility based.

"The NWS issues a Blizzard Warning when falling and/or blowing snow combines with strong winds to create dangerously low visibility over at least a three hour period. The threshold for wind is frequent gusts over 30 knots and visibility is frequently less than a quarter mile."

Ooh, mo' snow for Mpls. First real test of new snow boots on Das Audi today. Cold and snow snarled traffic and I had to go out into it. Tires felt good. So far so good.

NWS in Des Moines still predicting widespread moderate to heavy snow and wind.

Most of us will get 4-8” of mostly very light fluffy snow. Then start blowing that around for 36-48 hours. I fully expect most of the state to be in a “travel not advised” status by Friday morning to midday. I wouldn’t be surprised if plows get pulled at some point as well.

Keep in mind that this particular meteorgram run is using an 11:1 Snow to Liquid Ratio...typical to a moderately heavy snow. This snow event will be closer to 20:1 on the SLR...so pretty much double the snow totals that the Meteorgram is showing. Most of your NWS forecasts will make the adjustment on the SLR...most automated products default to the 10:1 ratio...something to keep in mind when you look at the various forecasts.
