IMO, that's exactly what we need. Offensively we need a stretch 5 who can run a high-post offense or a pick and roll and have a threat to pop to the 3pt line and be a threat. That pulls his defender out of the lane and lets Hunter or whomever get a better path to the hoop.

The key will be to have a big who can play that role and defend the post.
And hopefully manage defensively when switched onto guards. Our bigger guys were really pretty impressive in guarding on the perimeter in that circumstance this year. Sometimes got burned, but most times not.

Agree. I'm hoping it's a smaller part of the offense moving forward, as it feels like it was a desperation move to make some sort of space under the basket.
I think it also had to do with starting a freshman point guard and trying to get some pressure off of his shoulders to create early in the season. Hopefully we have a lot more ball screen offense next year with Hunter taking the next step (seemed to be more confident in the ball screen action towards the end of the year).

Not sure it was desperation as a lot of teams run plays through their post guys. Heck, ISU even did it back in the day with Georges Niang.

If he is a good passer, can hit a 15-18 foot jumper & put the ball on the floor- Basile is exactly what we need. Looking at his stats from last season he makes close to 60% of his 2pt shots, but only 28% of his 3's. So if we are looking for the 2nd coming of Georges- probably not. But he at least looks like he can finish in the paint. Plus he shot 78% from the line.

Sounds like a skilled big man to me. Just a matter if his skills can translate to the Big12.

Game Against Cleveland State - Yes PLEASE!
Basile scored 21 points against Arizona in this year’s NCAA Tournament. Sure looked like a guy that could play in the Big 12.

What's the big deal with Basile? Yeah he's 6'9" but he doesn't look long or athletic. He looks like your typical old fashion post player.

Far superior rebunder to Conditt and Jones. Stretch 4/5. Shot over 30% from 3 in conference and 47% from 3 in 2020/21. A taller, more skilled Jaz Kunc. His player rating on Bart Torvik equals Brockington this year.

Scored 21 against Arizona 2 weeks ago in Round 1.

I don’t know if I am remembering this right but wasn’t McNeil the one Huggins was always on about not playing defense and no effort? If so would not be a great fit
No, this is not the same kid. McNeil is a good shooter and plays with maximum effort on both sides of the ball. Would be a great get.

A major improvement over the previous many seasons was in how we handled on-ball screens.

Perhaps these new guys came in well coached in their previous programs, but Conditt looked a lot better in that regard this year. This staff appears to be able to teach it.

Niang and Daum are the prototypes Otz wants in a big.
So, less defensive focused? And if so, I am surprised we didn't go after Hawkins harder, or even play Enaruna more.

Imo everyone's prototype is a Georges with better defense imo. It will be interesting to which way we lean, offense or defense, when compromises have to be made. Not only in roster additions, but playing time.

We would've gone after Hawkins and would've landed him too if Hinson wouldn't have quit the day before practice started.

Hinson was a known offense first guy, and a small-ball forward (if that), so the fact we kept him is interesting. Although his displeasure in his role suggestive that he would not have played as much as desired, as we'd lean defense. Is that the case every year, or just this year because of trying to build a good foundation?

I don't exactly know TJ's 5-10 year plan er whatever, but I'd assume he's going to build his teams around defense but knows he's going to have to find guys that can put the ball in the basket. Because of that, his teams are going to be more balanced. Will we be a top 10 defensive team every single year? No. But our offense will likely not be in the 100's. (at least I'd hope not)

So we are comparing this kid to Niang? That's some pretty big shoes.

We also had some high flying athletes on Niangs teams too (Ejim and McKay).
A player comp doesn't mean he's as good as him or is going to be as good as him. Basile's style is similar to Niang's.

Given the nature of college basketball now, and rosters being so year-to-year, I am curious as to how much of an ideologue TJ is either way. I think we'll always recruit for good culture, but that's not synonymous with defense. You can have good culture and be just okay on defense with guys like Georges. How we managed the frontcourt this year, is notable, but perhaps not a sign of things going forward.
