What's the point of rolling blackouts and conserving power when it's -10 outside? Yeah sure I'll shut off my heat and freeze, sounds like a solid plan.
Ain't nothing "rolling" about it. Can still hear the planes land so glad the people traveling during a pandemic get to have power. I live between a fire station an airport and a hospital. I must not be on any of their lines.

My brother lives super close to a hyvee and had power restored within about 8 hours of the derecho. It's really odd what gets prioritized

FWIW if they have lost power ATC facilities have generators to keep them up and running.

Need to find that “friend” to cuddle up with and entertain each other during these times. I’m married so the wife would make me manually crank the furnace if the generator didn’t fire up.
LALALALALA TMI.

can someone fill me in on how its just so bad down there because of the cold?

I get the road aspect.. not having resources to treat roads and such.

why are there power issues? Is there more energy being used to run heat than AC units in the summer?

You don't see us losing our sh*t when its 110 degrees up here in the summer.

windmills shut down with some of these colder temps, as well as power lines that get iced over (Just like up here), but they have few people who know how to deal with it. Then with the windmills down, we are seeing a power shortage in the midwest to provide electricity for all of the heaters going.

i was wondering if windmills/oil had something to do with it.

we don't even see iced over power lines all that much up here. I get it happens. im guessing when it happens here we don't see much attention about it except locally whereas something like this happening in the great state of texas its going to be much more prevalent.

Come and Take it. Unless it’s 45 degrees.

10 hours now. They put a notice out to expect to not have power until tomorrow if you don't have it. **** me up. Gonna get down to - 1 tonight. My pipes are donezo.

It's more than just windmills we lost 36 GW of generation ability over night. That's just under double what Iowa produces.

most of them down there won't have the built in component heaters ours have up here. We've been running 24/7 up here this entire cold spree.

cause of cold? or ice? both?

Natural gas pressure is below what it takes to generate since home are using it more and they get priority. I'm not an engineer but that's what my nuclear engineer friend was telling me. Plus there was coal and natural gas delivery delays/cancelations due to the weather. So we're at 65% of gas/coal/nuclear and less than 50% renewables. They bunch them up when reporting them so it's hard to say the exact split. Then add the fact that this is unprecedented demand and you get this crap.
