Purdue as a whole struggled last year offensively I believe, so it's not a shocker that this defensive minded guy took a step back offensively after they lost a lot of playmakers that could get him easy shots.

Also, he shoots a career 48% from the 2. How is that not around 50%?

His junior was 42.7 which I used since you didn't like any of his freshman numbers (when he actually made a 3 by the way).

By the way I think without a dominant offensive player which they had his sophomore year, he negatively impacted his team offensively as a junior. My point in this whole thing is we don't have enough offensive guys that demand double teams to be able to play a guy who doesn't need a defender. In the right circumstances he could be an important part, we don't have that team

Because he can pass to someone else?

A team without a PG needs guys who can pass.

I’m not saying he’s Morris, Halliburton, or White. But a team without a PG is better served with guys who can pass than with just players who get the ball and try to score.

If we’re asking questions, I’m curious as to why you think steals are a great metric for defense.

Most players that are multiple all-conference defenders are starter worthy. Even more so when they can are 6’7”, athletic, and joining a team that’s desperate for defense. Our lack of team defense dictates we have as many versatile defenders as possible.


If you can add a P5 starter, you do it. His offense isn’t ideal due to his shooting, if it were he wouldn’t be an option. 6’7” guys that can defend nearly 1-5, handle, and shoot get paid.

As it stands now who runs point?

Harris(if eligible)?
Jackson?
Bolton?
JCL?
Johnson?

We don’t have one unless Johnson lives up to Prohms hype or Harris is eligible and makes major strides under Prohm. Same with Jackson and Bolton making major strides.

I’d take him and have several options and someone who is great at defense which was our biggest weakness last year.

We could still use a defender the next year if he sits. And that’s a big IF for any transfer this year. Guys can improve their game sitting out and stepping in a new system.

I think there’s a record number of waivers with COVID and rule changes on the horizon.

Sorry I wasn't meaning it to be a metric for great defense. I was responding to comment earlier about his steals. I think the challenge is he is so pathetic offensively you can't compensate, plus you can't have him on the floor at the end of a tight game, he would get fouled everytime - and miss.

He can't shoot that is the problem. He will never make NBA and get paid, name a single guard in NBA who can't make a college 3 in two season. I'll pop some popcorn and wait.

Of course a two year old can pass, but is he creating shots for teammates with his passes? stats say no. I was curious if there was something about his passing ability that I was missing that would compensate for the disaster the rest of his offensive game is.

You obviously have no idea how an offense works either. Try playing 4 on 5 on offense. They will sag off him clog the middle, if we set a screen they won't have to make decision they will hedge to the screener every time. Our best shooter or the ball handler will get doubled frequently because they don't have to guard him. You scream about our offense isn't the problem but you can't ruin your offense to fix your defense.

Did you ever play the game
 
Do you realize every player on a team can’t start and play from start to finish without ever coming off the bench? If they left him unguarded he could score. He can also get the ball and pass it to someone else to score if he’s getting close to the paint and they close in on him. You can be a good player without great stats.

The roundness of the 8 prevents it from being around the 50.
 
In order for us to play 3 5’s in the top 8, one will have to be able to play the 4(unlikely but maybe Foster can do it), or we are just playing a deeper bench than usually. 3 5’s in the top 8 leave 1 guy to play 1-4 off the bench. Which I understand never wanting Bolton, Harris, JCL, or Johnson to ever come off the court, but it’s not realistic.
 
Eastern is a solid player and normally, I would say he is a take. But, based on linked article there is some question if he is a grad transfer. Not sure what his major is and why Michigan didn't accept some of his credits.

I would take him as a grad transfer, but not a sit 1/play 1 transfer.

He might have played some PG at Purdue, but that is likely why he struggled last season. His game is probably best suited as a 3/4 surrounded by 3 other good jump shooters.

A big reason I don't like him as a sit-out transfer is my hope that Dubar and Blackwell will be better players by the 21/22 season.

One bad or non-shooter does not ruin an offense. We played Nixon and Jacobson as starters most of last season, and teams’ responses to them was... sagging off and then daring them to shoot it. Heck, they begged those two to shoot it. They often obliged, and Nixon was Brick City most of the season. Jacobson was slightly better but still pretty ugly.

Eastern is wash with those guys as a shooter, presents an upgrade as a slasher, and is an incredible upgrade on defense. I appreciate your appreciation for spacing on offense, but you cannot be as impossibly absolutist about it as you are attempting to be right now. There are other phases to the game, and you can build a successful offense with somebody besides just having five crack shooters out there.

The problem with last season was not our 7th in the conference shooting. It was our historically bad defense. You can afford to trade a little on offense if it gets your defense out of whatever cavern that was a few hundred feet below the cellar last year. I doubt we end up with this guy in any event, but our roster last year had one elite two-way player in Tyrese, a bunch of guys okay on offense but bad at defense, and then a bunch of bad players. A guy who is negative on offense and elite on defense represents a substantial upgrade on virtually every one of our returners save probably Bolton and Young. We are nowhere near good enough to be as picky as what you are suggesting.

Michigan is way better than us and wanted him.
