bruns said they were talking on cell phones for first half. the more i think about it though; ndsu wasnt that impressive; a very non-explosive team.

I've seen many with the same opinions that I have here.
Austin was shaky the first half.
Receivers need to find their hands.
Defense was terrible often (but occasionally put together a good series..so there's hope if they can find consistency)
Not too impressed with A Rob despite his big gianers.
VERY Impressed with Schwartz.
Special teams: Outstanding.
ISU has a lot to put together for the Iowa game in order to be competitive. But the good news is that NDSU was much better than I expected. The people who say that Craig Bohl is a great coach know what they are saying. I also thought that the running back Paschall was quite good for an FCS team.

NDSU's QB was pretty good. He made very good decisions and threw a good ball. In all honesty, he played better than AA did tonight.

1 penalty. But still, I agree, the lack of penalties is huge.
1 timeout while on defense too. This lead to NDSU field goal before half. Minus 1 for the coaching staff. But otherwise a great job by the coaching staff.

Exactly. I remember last year that Kansas State ran a fake punt in the very first non-conference game that they had in control. Me at home was thinking, wtf? But the announcers correctly said that now, every team had to spend time preparing for that play, whether or not KSU ever used it again.
You can sometimes be too vanilla. Need to make other teams waste practice time on certain formations, plays, etc that you won't even use.
Say, was anyone who watched the ISU season with George Amundson at QB reminded of that season during ISU's last scoring drive?

No kiddin? Sorry I missed it. I can take timeouts on defense I can take them on offense too if we have the wrong play but having to call them just so we don't get a DOG is ridiculous.
We got lucky there wasn't a review in tonights game, or that playbook might have been flipped a few more pages.
We just played NDSU, an average team in AA football, and your response is we didn't use all of our playbook? Wow. This was a bad team. Did you notice how slow they looked on offense? Our defense is really, really bad.
I think you're right about the Kansas comment. I know the whole Oklahoma situation worked out in our favor but for some reason I was thinking that he was the one that was told by Kansas to go kick rocks on signing day or thereabouts because KU was oversigned. Oh well, I'm glad he's in Ames.
NDSU's qb was not good. Better than SDSU's qb last year, but I can see why the Bison fanbase is split on who should be their starter. AA made pretty good decisions but was just off a little. I imagine he's swimming a little right now in all the new terminology and reads.
NDSU's QB wasn't good. He was slow. He missed way too many passes. You could tell by just watching him throw that he tried to aim the ball instead of just throwing, and many were way off the mark.
I thought Arnaud had a good night, but he will need to take some steam off of the ball, otherwise you see some of those fast balls get deflected off of our WRs and intercepted.
Liked our receivers. Couple drops, but they all look really strong and able to break that first tackle, which is the key to RAC. AA needs to go through his progressions faster. He was staring down receivers way to often tonight. I expect that to improve with experience in this offense though. Running game look pretty good, but I was a little surprised that we didn't see more guys get some carries. I thought we were a little deeper at that position. Defensively, we were allowing WAY to many yards off the edge, both running and passing. If the D-Line can't get a push up-field to disrupt plays, the LB's are going to have to play wider in an attempt to string plays out towards the sidelines. Or play the safetys closer to the LOS. Liked the varied blitz packages and the down field coverage.
Congrats to CPR on his first win. I feel a lot better about our program after watching that game. No penalties, good play calls, and an focused team. Herman's offense isn't clicking yet, but you can see the potential. I think the D can be passable if they actually get low for tackles. They were in the right spots most of the time, but couldn't take people down.
A few specific things...
1) Sims & Reynolds are going to make a big impact on this team. So is the re-discovery of Marquis Hamilton.
2) Our O-line could be good this year. They made some mistakes, but overall there were bigger holes tonight than I have seen at any time against any opponent in the last 10 years (since Ben Bruns). We didn't do this against UNI or Kent last year...
3) Our LBs suck. They really struggle at shedding blocks, which is one of the make-or-break skills. Hopefully AJ Klein and Jake Knott are quick studies.

Do you also think that since this is brand new for everyone that they want to build and get good on the basics? Brand new coach, brand new offense, first game - yeah, lets not run everything in the playbook as Iowa is next! wow.
we were in a game through 3/4 of this thing and you guys are playing the playbook game?

This will happen this year, a lot. We'll have a lot of quick 3 and outs (passing game not eating up clock, and no huddle eating up even less) and that will destroy our D.
Are we going to find a way to run the ball other than the zone read? It worked at times tonight but I don't see it working against better defenses. Hopefully we find better ways to get ARob the ball, he looked great.

You were probably thinking about Brayden Burris. He was once committed to K-State before being informed just before signing date in '08 that they were going to grayshirt him. Thankfully, for both Burris and ISU, he reopened his recruiting and signed with Chizek. He ended up picking the right school, but his short list came down to 2 head coaches with one foot out of the door. He got some playing time tonight and will continue to be needed to provide OL depth.
