Offical Postgame thread

3) Our LBs suck. They really struggle at shedding blocks, which is one of the make-or-break skills. Hopefully AJ Klein and Jake Knott are quick studies.

Jesse Smith actually showed up a lot.

Everyone needs to concentrate on wrapping up when making the tackle.

Are we going to find a way to run the ball other than the zone read? It worked at times tonight but I don't see it working against better defenses. Hopefully we find better ways to get ARob the ball, he looked great.
Not very impressed with anything tonight besides David Sims. Pretty decent upgrade over the guys we put back there last year.

During his interview on the official site a couple of weeks ago, Bleil talks about the run game including inside zone, outside zone, trap, counter, and power.

This.

Overall I think we played a solid game and showed very little...My biggest concern BY FAR is the fact we still have yet to learn to properly break down and make the sure tackle.

Simms will be a good one..just dont ask him to make the open-field tackle... Im sure he can, but he really was exposed by the NDSU back on the long run..

They said on the PA system it was the highest attendance for an opener since Iowa in '87. That ought to put to rest the idea that fewer people attend a Thursday opener than a Saturday.

false. theres no evidence if we did the same things we did for this game for a saturday game, that we wouldnt see increased attendance as well. We gave away these tickets for 10 bucks. We also included these in a mini-pack, one of few ways to get tickets to the iowa game besides season tickets. Many iowa state fans probably bought that pack for the iowa ticket, and figured since they had the ticket, they might as well come to the NDSU game. We also had near perfect weather (not very hot like some opening games are), and it was the first game of a new coach. I bet the same attendance happens for a saturday game. There is NO statistical evidence that thursday games have improved attendance up to now, relative to the average attendance for the season they are in. Id like to see us alternate years sat\thurs.

Also, there were quite a few holes in people through the middle of the stadium (paid season ticket holders who were counted in attendance figures but were not there), and the stadium *really* cleared out starting the middle of the 3rd quarter, as people needed to leave because they had work\school tomorrow morning.... and many people cant just take vacation friday.

I left right after the game. I live in west des moines. Im *just* now getting home. And i have to work tomorrow. ugh.

I was not very pleased with our performance, and without improvement we will be lucky to win three games. If their QB doesn't fumble at the goal line and if there was review of A-Rob's fumble that is a 14 point swing, which makes the game way too close. We didn't have the game in hand until about five minutes into the 4th quarter.

The defense was very underwhelming against an inferior opponent and gave up a lot of big plays. It could get ugly when we get to the Big XII.

The two biggest things I noticed on offense were dropped passes and Arnaud throwing balls behind the receivers. Hopefully some of that will change with increased practice.

The best plus I take away from the game is Josh Lenz returning punts. After last year just having someone who doesn't drop the ball and can at least contemplate running after the catch is a huge blessing.

So what would suffice for you? An actual sell out with every seat filled? Face it, Thursday night works...plain and simple:biggrin: plus our record on Thursdays is stellar:wink:

No, there is no statistical evidence for thursdays being inherently better. We practically had to give away tickets to this game to get the attendance figures we did.

Hopefully the people that showed up liked what they saw and will continue to come out and support the team. The team will need as much help as it can get and it would be great to create a respectable atmosphere at the Jack.

its north dakota state..... lets wait till next week to start picking out players that look good... BUT i will say David Sims plays like he wants to rip opponents heads off.... and thats exactly what we need.

You do realize with that logic you could essentially throw EVERY attendance record we have right out the window eh?

Team looked sluggish, unexcited, unprepared. The lone bright spot was A Rob. Enjoy our only win of the season.

Were we watching the same game?? I think they actually finally had some excitement and fire underneath them for once. IMO they actually played a full game for the first time in 2 years. I also thought they handled the offense very well for the first game in a new system.

Josh Lenz was a plus.

Schwartz was better than I expected (I'm leaning toward favoring him as the feature back, but I suppose the plays he knows is holding him back).

THE COACHES are an obvious plus over anything we've seen in the last two years at least.

Thinking back to when McCarney had his first game vs Wyoming, I'd say that Rhodes and company did better than McCarney too. Hopefully this plays out during the season and throughout the tenure here.

I like what I saw from Sims.
I wish JSchwartz would have gotten in earlier and would have like to have seen Bo at some point. I also wish the frosh LBs got in.
But oh well, its the first time in almost a year I'm going to bed with a win!!!
Let's hope this team makes improvements throughout the next few practices.

I felt that Sims and Robinson were our best players on the field tonight. I liked our D-backs (not sure why people were complaining about the safeties), but it doesn't really matter how good they are if your DL is bad, which ours is.

In conclusion, our offense didn't look quite as good as I was expecting, the defense looked as poor as I was expecting, and it's going to be difficult for us to win many football games because of our deficiencies in the trenches.

I do think we'll be able to hang with a few teams because of our offensive system.

no props for Jesse Smith?

He had every tackle there for awhile til Sims took over and dominated. Sims were everywhere and doing everything. Mahoney was excellent, just dead on with every fg attempt. Lenz was the suprise of the night for me, he looked like a seasoned veteran and defintely not a twig. He is built solid and looks like he could be a playmaker. Brantner was booming All-American punts, he had to avg 50 yrds a punt. The place would have EXPLODED if Hamilton would have caught that pass from Reynolds.
