Supposedly going to put in a Walmart on 36th and north Ankeny Blvd.
For that to happen, the area to be built on would have to be rezoned as Ankeny 2040 plan has it In low to high density. Hopefully, all current residents, mostly low density, would fight like hell to keep it residential.

You're in luck then, because that intersection is in the capital improvement plan to get redone.

Or perhaps you're not in luck because in typical Ankeny fashion it's being done 10 years too late and by the time it happens your kids will have aged out of playing sports at Prairie Ridge.

The bolded is pretty accurate.

That pavement has been falling apart for years!! The IDOT has applied band-aids by trying to patch it, but the joints are falling apart.

Just out of curiosity, how do you propose they construct this? Do you want them to flat out close the road and construct it quicker? I don't think that's what the businesses would want. They are providing right-in, right-out access at strategic locations, most of the businesses are connected with internal circulation to 5th and/or 9th.

The project is needed and long overdue. Oh, and wait until they start on the segment to the south between 1st Street and Peterson Drive. Those businesses do not have the luxury of alternate access points.
This.

It sucks but plan ahead. We should all be used to it in Ankeny.

fart noises.

give me a whole foods or fresh thyme or trader joes. there is no option anywhere in ankeny for one of those.
Yes could love those stores. Would also love a new Walmart. Fantastic for cheap groceries and quick delivery with the monthly Walmart+.

Really cannot stress how useful this subscription has been for our young family of 5.

We lived in Ankeny from 08-12 and even at that time the town completely lost it's appeal. What was once a convenient commuter town is now a city planning disaster. I honestly don't know why people continue to move there? Things must be slowing down though because I heard from and Ankeny School administrator several months back that the third high school plans are off the table.

And that is due mainly in part of the speed limit between Ames and Ankeny sometimes approaching 100 mph.

I did that commute for 2 years and can't say I ever saw cars going that fast. LOL Iowa interstate traffic is slow compared to a lot of other areas.

Did that commute for about a year and a half when I lived there. Didn’t get to 100, but switching lanes always felt more daring than it should’ve been.

In general I-35 traffic between Minneapolis and Kansas City really seems to have picked up over the last 8-10 years.

That's because here in central Iowa showing a signal change is considered a challenge........not courtesy.

We’ve been here 10 years and like it a lot. Judging by the population growth, it seems many other people do too. Is it perfect? No. None of the suburbs are.

The traffic sucks sometimes, but we have it so good in Iowa compared to a lot of other places.

Seems like people are always complaining about any road construction in Ames, do these people just not want roads to be fixed?

I'm here for any Ankeny hate though, Ankeny sucks.

Using this thread to complain how long the median construction has been taking on Mills Civic in WDSM. Not a huge headache, but really congests during rush hour.

It’s 2025. Inconveniences today > logical and thoughtful changes for the future. Get with the program.

I've lived in NW Ankeny for 6 years now, and I think I've figured out every direct way and every back way to get out of Ankeny, in each direction.

These entire six years, those outside lanes on Ankeny Blvd between 1st and 18th have been horrendous. It needs to be done, it just sucks that it'll take that long. Here's hoping that construction helps alleviate the bad flooding Ankeny Blvd can get during heavy rains.

Living in a bigger city now has its headaches with traffic. But one difference I appreciate is people know to use both lanes and zipper merge. Versus the Iowa way of stacking in the main lane and refusing to let anyone in.
