No more band, please!

I so wish we still had negative rep right now. The pep band is one of the things about the gameday atmosphere that I really miss about not being able to attend games anymore. Seriously the pep band has some really great renditions of some great songs. Vehicle by Ides of March, Take on Me by Aha, 25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago, all are done really well. In fact I'd probably buy a cd of the pep band playing these songs.

So to the OP, you are a moron and completely incorrect.

dumb question..do they still have cd's of the band playing? I'm guessing they would be sold at the bookstore if they were available. I remember as a kid listening to the ISU band cassette tapes before a game...good memories.

been a lurker here for awhile....

Band is great....OP is nuts, in my opinion.

They need to shitcan the DJ that plays so damn much 90s techno crap music.....where the hell is the rule that says you have to play Sandstorm, Get Ready For This, and all this ******* **** all damn game.....come on, the people of Iowa are kind of sheltered, but ******.....what about some damn modern music, or rock and roll for gods sake?!?!?!?!?

Seriously.

I could be a d-bag but I'll cut you slack. It's what gets kids pumped for the games...if you played rock and roll music they wouldn't care or know the song, so they wouldn't cheer.

I think CascadeClone said it perfectly.

I say this as someone who attended the Hockey games and just didn't really think the band fit there. I could be persuaded...but at the games I've been to, it was more fun without the band. And actually I would be curious to see a hockey game played at a school where it's a supported sport to see if there is a pep band, and how well it works.

I think the band needs to be at basketball games though because they can really help with the home court advantage. I think, like everyone has said so far, fights REALLY needs to be played less, when it's played too much it loses its ability to pump up the crowd. It needs to be used to try to help pick up momentum, and to unify the crowd in the clutch situations. The band needs to take hints from the sound system and play loud, rocking songs that get the crowd involved. Songs to stomp, clap, etc to are going to be the best songs to play. I love "I'm on a Boat" as much as anyone (I actually really like the marching band version) but it doesn't work as a time out song.

So, to the OP: I would say you're dead, DEAD wrong. Yes the band has been a little lackluster this year, but hopefully it gets fixed in due time.

Everything in Hilton's atmosphere is completely and 100% a matter of timing (and almost always completely controlled by the people upstairs). Hell, the majority of the time when the crowd chants CYCLONE POWER—it happened because the band director was told to start it via headset since he's the only one who has direct influence over what people in the student area do/say.

Sandstorm is huge because it gets played during huge moments. Have you been around when it's been played during non-conference games that nobody's into? It's not some magical summoning of frenzy—people only get into it because of WHEN it's played.

Unfortunately for the band, a decent chunk of our playing time is "filler" music—meaning it's frequently at the ends of time outs when nobody's that pumped up anymore anyway. Additionally, the director is frequently told over the headset to play something without much advance warning. There are only so many songs that the band can quickly play by memory like that, so things like Fights get played more often than what anybody really wants. That's just the nature of having to coordinate so many people/things so spontaneously.

The only thing that bothers me about the band - is when you meet someone thats in the band and all they can talk about is how awesome band is or how crazy band parties are.

Sorry you feel that way, but you're doing a mighty good job of generalizing. Like another poster said, the band is part die-hard crazies, part regular college kids who just like being in the organization, and the rest fall somewhere in-between.

Personally, I'm in my 4th year in the band, and I've stuck around because I love playing the trumpet and I love watching the Cyclones. It's great if people enjoy what the band does because we enjoy doing it, but by no means do I feel entitled to be loved by every person who steps foot in Hilton/Jack Trice. Just like I hate the Delta Dental Smile Cam with the passion of a thousand burning suns, everyone is free to have their opinions on what goes on during game day.

Oh, and I also love how much the marching suspenders accentuate my lovely female figure.

I think it is time for the band to go bye-bye at basketball games. They don't add anything that the sound system can't do better. In fact, the speakers pump in something and then the band chirps in and kills the enthusiasm.

And they play the fight song so much that people don't even stand for it every time. I went to the ISU-KU game at Phog and they played their fight song TWICE. We play it 6-8 times a game.

Bands were important before sound systems. Just an antique now.

Sorry I just got to the party, but you are a ******* moron.

I wish "For I For S" was played more (ever). Part of the reason Fights is played so much is because it's pretty much our only school song anyone knows.

"Rise Sons" is pretty cool too but has been disavowed for some reason.

I'd like to see them enhance the band by putting microphones over there and running it through the sound system. The problem is that the canned music is so loud that you can barely hear the band when they switch to it. The band doesn't kill the enthusiasm near as much as the lame *** promotions and features.

You can't play cowbell with a trap set...
Sure you can. It won't sound quite the same, but it could be done.
In fact, if the drummer was good, it would actually be pretty sweet. After the "Faster" part, he would just do a solo on the toms. Then after the "WOOO" part, he just breaks out into the standard beat on Hi-Hat, Snare, and Bass.

Like I said, no excuses. Make it happen.

The fight song less would be a great first step. And it sounds like most agree on that so I must not be DEAD wrong. Maybe I went too far but that isn't the same thing as being completely off-base.

Saying you would like it if the fight song was played less is a perfectly respectable suggestion, and it's apparently one that a lot of people agree with. Hell, I agree with you, and I'm one of the people playing it. You're not dead wrong or completely off-base.

However, there are a lot of people on this board who have either been in the band at some point or just really like the band, so I could've told you right away that posting a thread titled, "No more band, please!" was going to get you all sorts of crazed responses, regardless of what the full content of the message was.

If you make an outlandish statement, then you'll get outlandish responses. That's how message boards work.

Dumb --- Dumb --- Dumb !!!!!!

I personally love the band, and I have no affiliation with it besides being just another fan at Hilton. Ever since I took my first steps inside Hilton, the signature horns and drums echoing through the crowds of people are part of what make Hilton great for me, and if it were taken away, it would never be the same.

Honestly, I think it is just the opposite. I don't get to many games anymore but the ones that I have I think the crowd is starting to rolling just before introductions and then we have to watch a movie on the screen that prompts a few oohs and ahs from the crowd but otherwise we sit there in SILENCE. Then they have to artificially get the crowd going again. I am not a fan of - "Please direct your attention to the video screen" - usually they aren't that good anyway.

I like Hilton with the atmosphere of a college basketball arena not a movie theater or a concert hall.

I NEED MORE COWBELL!!!!!

I like making fun of band geeks as much as the next guy. I had a friend who is about 6'4" 270 (played goaltender on the ISU hockey squad.) He would always point at the marching band and yell "Nerds, nerds, nerds" like Ox as they took the field. It cracked me up. That being said, I think the techno crap is overdone and the band is under appreciated. Sandman was awesome at the Okie State game before the onside kick, but it is not for all occasions. Pep bands are part of what makes the college game atmosphere different and in almost every way superior to a NBA game.
