No Divisions for Football

With 10 teams, it only makes sense to not have divisions and let the top two teams square off.

Good call. No point in having divisions without expansion. FWIW I don't think there's much sense in having a championship game without divisions or expansion, but I guess that ship has already sailed.

I think 2014 showed what the playoff committee thinks about that. The CCG has the added bonus on top of that of dollar bills for the schools, too. So I like it.

That's the situation they dug themselves in.

"Hey, we might get shafted from the Playoff without a Championship game."

"But we already play round-robin..."

"Got it: add more teams and build conferences again!"

Later...

"On second thought, we don't want to add those teams. We'll just build conferences without adding more."

"...Two conferences of five teams, that still play round-robin...?"

"Nevermind, forget the conferences, we'll just have our top two teams play each other... Again."

Can't wait for an undefeated Big 12 team to lose the Championship game to a one or two loss team, thus resulting in neither of them making the Playoff.

What are the odds that the Big 12 regular season champion will get knocked out of a playoff spot by losing the Big 12 championship game next year?

It's high risk, high reward. The payout is nice, but if the regular season champ doesn't hold serve and win the conference title game then the Big 12 is going to be left out of the national playoff.

That depends.

If the regular season champion is Texas, Big 12 Refs will do everything in their power to ensure that Texas does not lose.

If the regular season champion is Oklahoma, there's an extremely high chance that they don't show up and get thrashed by #2.

If the regular season champion is anyone else, no one will care and the playoff committee won't select them even if they're 13-0. They'd rather have 3 SEC teams with 2 losses a piece than TCU, Baylor, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, or ... god forbid... Iowa State.

This is stupid.

Say team #1 already beat team #2, then there is no point to the Championship because they already played.

This would happen regardless of divisions because of a round robin.

This also happens all the time in other conferences with divisions and more than 10 teams when the two teams played in the regular season already.

I think there is also the chance that the Big 12 has two equally strong teams (think TCU and Baylor in 2014) and by pitting them against each other in a Game #13, the conference is essentially assuring itself of a team in the playoff - whoever wins that game.

You don't see that in the B1G or the SEC where the conference's playoff standard bearer goes against a weaker team from the opposite division in the CCG. Yes, the better team has a higher chance of winning, but if they lose, they are SOL.

I guess I don't get some of the disagreement over this. The other conferences have the possibility of playing a team twice due to a conference game. The difference is that in the Big 12, it will be a repeat no matter what, which I get. I don't think its that big of a deal.

There is always a risk that an undefeated team will be knocked out due to losing their conference championship game.

Good move.

In reading the release, we are calling the Power-5 conferences "Autonomy Conferences" now? Didn't know that was a thing.

Since the Big 12 has been at 10 teams, the 2nd place team has finished with a conference record of 8-1 or 7-2.

Yeah I agree the refs will make darned sure that Texas wins the conference .......Like putting One Second on the clock so that the Longhornies can kick the winning field goal to beat Nebraska.

But the Big Red had the last Laugh by Joining the Big Ten ....Texas won the game but Nebraska went to a Better Conference ...with a LOT more $$$$$$$$$$$$$

I asked my relatives from Nebraska if they like the Big Ten conference...Its better than getting screwed out of a conference title by the Texas Shorthorns
