Nightmare scenario (Iowa)

It seems like there's been some revisionist history as if Iowa was just absolutely terrible under Fran, in order to hype the new coach. Obviously Fran could never get it done in March which created a lot of program apathy, but its not like getting to the tournament was rare. Their defense was generally atrocious but he regularly had top 10 offenses.
This was the beauty of Fran. His numbers were too good to get fired but you knew he was never going to do anything meaningful and you could constantly count on him and his family to embarrass the program.

It is probably too much to ask that we get all of that out McCollum. I think he will perform overall about the same but not be the constant embarrassment

If a 10 seed gets to play as close to home as a 2 then the committee really messed up.

Blum and Williams talked to about how there will be a shortage of charter flights so many teams will be playing close to home this year.

Folks, WE are everyone else nightmare scenario right now. This is the most talented, deepest, and healthiest team TJ has brought into the tournament. We are clicking on all cylinders and we are PISSED after losing in the semi’s to Arizona. We have something to prove and the first couple teams we play will be sacrificial lambs to appease TJ’s wrath.

I’m not the least bit concerned about Iowa. They are a favorable matchup with much less talent than Miami, Kentucky or UCLA.
Doesn't matter...their shooting percentage jumps about 20 percentage points whenever they play us for some reason. Send them as a 9 seed in Arizona's region. If they win their 8-9 game, the they can suffer the punishment of the Wildcats.

Don’t get me wrong…. I’m not scared to play Iowa at all…. just would rather not have to deal with it at all if I’m being honest.

As ISU fans, we all know that on any given day, anyone can lose to anyone in this tournament, and especially when Iowa will have nothing to lose…. and will get up for this game big time like they would for no other team.

Not to mention…. I would rather us lose to any other team in this tournament before I would want to lose to them. Worst fans in the country…. nationally recognized as that.

Anyone else like me nervous about the possibility of Iowa dropping to a 10 and getting placed in our bracket, setting up a possible second round matchup? I know we would beat them 4/5 times, but they would slow it down and find open guys out of our traps. Stirtz shot making can be truly elite. I’m just hoping the committee avoids this even though they don’t have to. What a horrendous way that would be to end this season.

We'd kill them

And Mad Fran had one of his better teams in 2020 when the NCAA tournament was cancelled. We were very lucky that we sucked in 2020 and 2021 when it really didn't matter. Iowa didn't.

McCollum's first season was pretty similar to most of Fran's seasons at Iowa.

Both teams would have to win the first game first.

But yeah no thanks to them, UNI, WI (although they're a lot more respectable but I hate going to work with that kind of deal) or Nebraska on the optics piece.
I would rather face a team in the 2nd round (provided we win our first game) that has never faced or prepared for our defense before and only has one day prep to do so.

The only chance Iowa vs ISU could happen is either the elite 8 or final 4, which isn’t happening. Close thread.

The hilton matchup says otherwose

Texas Tech did a number on ISU in Hilton a few weeks ago. ISU beat them by 20 in Kansas City.

Iowa will need a 1985 Villanova shooting exhibition (78.6% from the field against Georgetown) to beat ISU. Now the NCAA is a crapshoot and any and everything can happen. But I wouldn't bet they can do it and I'm not worried a bit if ISU should play them.

I guess the bottom line is that it’s hard to imagine the committee doing something this crappy to a 2 seed. No team would want to face their intrastate rival that they’ve already beaten once early in the tournament. That should be a given.
The 1999-2000 ISU Elite 8 MBB team would disagree with the bolded.

I am thoroughly unworried about our first 2 rounds, whoever they happen to be. Of course, once the brackets are out I'll have myself convinced that our second round game will be super dangerous.
Unless we are hampered with so much foul trouble that we can't play defense we will win our first game. The second round will require our big 3 to play well and the opponent to not shoot like crazy, whoever it ends up being. Every round after that will need us to play near our peak, like at KC. If we do that, we will go far. If we don't, it won't matter a lot who our 1 or 2/3 is. With our defense and variety of scoring options we are much less dependant on the draw than most teams. There isn't a single team out there hoping that we're the 2 or 3 in their region.

Does Purdue bump us out of St Louis if they beat Michigan? I wouldn’t think so because Illinois would likely get moved also being the three plus we do have that head to head road win over them. But I really don’t follow the analytics that close.
