Nice Restaurants in Des Moines .

I thought I read somewhere that they were remodeling and name change

I had heard about a new owner as well, but their Facebook page changed to permanently closed a day ago.

The new owner who took over the place in January really drove it into the ground. Had never run a bar before, didn't listen to the staff as to what worked there (most of which eventually quit I believe), didn't have most beers on tap, got rid of the mystery beer, jacked up the prices on the specials, etc.

The latter, they swap the beef for carrots, it's also got goat cheese on the inside. The other women in the group raved about it and the sauce it came with, so I got it as my husband and I were both curious. To be clear, it wasn't bad, I just didn't really understand why the other folks loved it so much, and I say this as someone who likes goat cheese and the occasional vegetarian entree. I brought the leftovers home, but didn't fight my husband when he asked to eat them.
Ya that's a big time no from me even though I like the creativity. I imagine that was a $50+ plate?

Actually, it was under $50, more like $30something, so that was a plus. We split like 6 appetizers with the table, my husband and I split the Caesar salad, and then each got an entree plus dessert, and also did a couple of cocktails. I couldn't tell you what we paid for the meal overall, but I thought prices were not unreasonable for what they were going for.

I'm guessing it was around $100 a piece. I've spent that at Johnny's so not terrible.

My favorite mem:
I gotta admit, I was kinda "that guy" once a long time ago back when they did some recruiting party at 3Bag in West Des Moines years ago. I think they had maybe Chris Ash and Tony Alford and 1 other assistant there from the staff giving a rundown of the class they had just signed. This was right after we had missed winning the Big 12 north for the 2nd year in a row after another big miss by Bret "Shaggy" Culbertson late in the game, both which we lost in OT. We had 0 kickers in the class so during the Q&A portion I asked "I see we do not have a kicker in this class. Being that we've lost a chance to play in the Big 12 title game 2 years in a row now after some big missed kicks why are we not looking to bring in someone at that position?" Alford rolled his eyes and turned his back at me like he was pissed. I can't remember if it was Ash or the other guy that wound up answering my question because you could tell all 3 looked a little caught off guard by the question and were hesitant to answer it as 1 of them said to the other with a grin on his face "so do you want to answer this one?" I think the response I got was something like "Yes those were 2 big misses but Shaggy also has made some big kicks previously that helped win us some games and usually is pretty reliable so we're committed to him." Of course there were some folks in the room that probably were Shaggy fans because he's from Des Moines and clapped at the response but I also had a few guys come up to me later and tell me it was a good question and was glad someone brought up the elephant in the room.

A couple of new places we've really enjoyed, Guesthouse Tavern + Oyster out in Waukee and the new Table 128 near downtown. Guesthouse is a collaboration of owners/chefs from Barn Town & Django and Table 128 is one we'd been waiting a long time for after they moved out of their location in Clive.

The wife and I recently discovered Simon's in Des Moines. We had the onion rings for an appetizer, I had the chicken Parm, and I believe my wife had a fillet. we both walked away very satisfied(I only ate half of my entre) and both felt it was hands down one of the best Italian places we have been. It's not a dive or a dump, but it isn't 801 chop. but the food is outstanding!
We love Simon's, one of our favorite places. No reservations unless you're a big group, so be ready to wait if you go on a popular time. They do have a nice separate waiting area now though where you can relax with a beverage while you wait. Plus no corkage fee and the Red Velvet cake with every meal is a great final touch!

Their lasagna is amazing! Really cool place

The funny is only because of the last sentence. It made me smile.

A hill I will die on - for the money, Simons is the best restaurant in Des Moines (food, experience, vibe, prices).

Also had, in my opinion, the best wings in Des Moines. Have gone there a lot over the last decade. Went several months ago and there were *maybe* 12 beers on tap. Used to be almost 100.

I’ve never seen a new owner kill something so quickly.

Durring our meal the chef(owner?) came out to each table and asked how their meal was. We also got a peice of complimentary red velvet cake that we both agreed was delicious... My wife is not particularly fond of cake, and I am not particlarly fond of red velvet.

Yes, he's been doing this for a long time. I've been a couple of times and I don't get the hype over the food itself.

I really want to try Oak Park.
It's very good and very pricey. The gnocchi is a must. They had a mushroom ragù with pork belly that was possibly the best thing I've ever put in my mouth but I don't think it's on the menu any more. We went in January but I would love to go back in the fall months when everything they're cooking is in season and local.

Some other "nice" places we really like to go to:
Skips
Lucca
Django
Alba
Harbinger (if you like veggies and small plates)
Alba
Aposto

My blackhorse, hidden gem: el Chero on Hubbell. It's a Salvadorian/Honduran joint with some of the best pupusas and authentic Central American food.
