Next Years Team

Hopefully Hoiberg goes out and gets a coach who can teach defense and how to box out.

I wouldn't say "teach defense", I think our guys showed great ability to play D in stretches this year. How about finding someone to build toughness and consistency. This season was INCREDIBLY inconsistent. The talent is there, but I would say I felt we only played with reckless abandon for 40 minutes of the Arkansas, Iowa, and KU (at Hilton) games. Maybe that loss @ TT did something to this team's confidence. I know they had already lost to South Carolina before that in a similar fashion to today, but I didn't feel like the effort really dropped off until after that loss. Then there was the week in February with the two road wins that tempted me to buy back in.

I'll always love the Cyclones, but gosh, this year's team could not play defense when it mattered more times than we could get away with. Some great stretches, especially in the big comebacks, but the consistency was not there for the full 40 minutes. Hopefully this will light a fire under these guys to feel like they have something to prove next year. It will take time to heal from the loss today though.

I just don't get the "inconsistency" thing. Off the top of my head we lost 3? now games we were favored in this year?

We need a pure shooter to complement Monte, and I'm hoping desperately it's Hallice Cooke. Nothing against Naz; he's a great teammate and will have a great senior year, one way or the other.
As I said in another thread, we desperately need a power forward/rebounder who complements and enhances Niang and McKay. There's a lot of buzz about Williams but who knows.

The intangibles are mentality and smartness, which are distinct IMO from just "attitude." There has to be intelligence and consistent cohesion on the court. And I just never senses it this year.
I thought the Big12 tournament was fool's gold, and unfortunately I was right.

I disagree. I still love how the guys played at times, but if you look back this year, we had major opportunities that were in front of us, and the team flopped. Hell, players even ADMITTED to this. Something was off in that locker room this year.

You say "flopped" and I say "exposed." What do you want them to say?

Defense has to become a priority or it won't matter.

I thought it was better this year though.

I will remind you that Hogue averaged 8.4 boards last year. Is it possible that the change in personal changed the responsibilities? I agree that Hogue didn't seem like the same player, but when McKay is grabbing the boards, Hogue loses certain opportunities.

I also agree with a lot of people about Naz. Seems like the perfect 6 man.

We can't overact to each individual player. It was a team effort to lose this one.

I hate to be the bringer of bad news but next year's team is going to have deficiencies, we're going to lose a game people think we "shouldn't" lose, and the odds are against us to win the league, win the conference tournament, and make the Final Four. I just have to question the level of CBB awareness from a nice sized chunk of the CF Nation.

I'm not saying he is, but if he's starting next year, you have a limited player at the 2 spot. That's a problem if you're talking about a Final Four run.

He's too inconsistent from 3, and can't defend well.

He's a great 6th/7th man, but he's not a starter on 90% of Final Four teams in the last 30 years.

Okay coach. Naz is starting at the 2 next year, so I guess we shouldn't buy Final Four tickets.

I find myself skeptical of how complete Burton's skill set may be. But damit, there's gotta be something special about a man that in every video looks smaller than the entire opposing team yet somehow throws down dunks over opponents from 12 feet out (also consistently appearing to levitate while doing so).

Players admitted after a few of the terrible losses that they thought they could just show up and win.

That happened once; TT. I was as ****** as anyone else on that one. But soon thereafter it became obvious to me that our expectstions were inflated and there would be limitations to this group; ie-lack of bulk/size, lack of point guard backup, lack of defensive quickness, lack of shooting depth.

Today was a lack of effort. How that happens is beyond me, but that's how I saw it.

Oh. So we should just fast forward to 2016-17?

This x1000. Superior insight.

Out-rebounded 52-37. ISU let a 6'4" guy get 9 offensive rebounds by himself.

Next year's team should not have any issues getting motivated. They should be in gym and weight room tomorrow
