I've wanted new uniforms since these ones came out. They're cool, but too much like USC's. I want a modern look like Tampa Bay, Seattle, or Oregon. Not sure what tradition we'd be ruining. Our uniforms and logo have changed roughly 300 times.

I'm all for our own identity, but, come on, those uniforms are hideous. Seattle is tolerably bad (compared to atrocious with their old ones), Oregon is gimmicky but still awful, and Tampa s just... just... well, not down with the digital alarm clock numbers. Somebody should have put a stop to that one.

I'm firmly convinced football is going through an era not unlike what baseball did in the 1970s and 1980s and basketball did in the 1990s and 2000s. Eventually, each have come around to the clean, simple, classic, timeless looks that defined the best in the sports (nobody prefers the old Devil Rays' logo over the Yankees or the Red Sox or the new Bucs logo compared to the Packers G or the Cowboys' star).

Transitions away from this...

And back to things like this...

...Is for the good of us all.

College football--perhaps no sport, save baseball, relying more on institutional continuity and tradition--will realize this eventually. We're just going through a little teenage rebellion right now.

I'm glad ISU has declined to join. We've a pretty conservative fan base and culture in Ames. I'm not crazy in love with the current uniforms and could see some tweaks/maybe a redesign, but something within the context of our current design system, colors, logo, and traditional football elements = good.

Am I the only one who hated those uniforms? The white numbers & losing to the haks ruined everything for me.

Agree, the big fat white numbers killed the entire thing.

I'm pretty sure I applauded them on CF when they were unveiled, partly because I never thought it would go from initial concept to reality. And it ran into the "numeral-size" rule, or whatever it was, forcing a compromise. I think there are possible tweaks to be able to obey the rules but still not kill the look of the original — I'll get back to that in one of the dozen or so offseason uniform threads.

Those Jack Trice unis are hideous. They were fine for 1 game, but don't want to see those again.

Good example w/ Buffalo — helmet logo updated in (?) late -70s, early -80s isn't as good as the simple red buffalo, but putting it on non-white helmet was even worse.

Golden State's uniform design has a LOT going for it (just enough uniqueness compared to typical designs, won't be in immediate danger of seeming dated when trends change, and definite nod to identity/tradition).

Hmmm, maybe not as close as I remembered. But maybe its the lighting in those photos because on tv the 49er helmets look more gold than that photo (which makes them look almost a light tan), and in the old Bruce era clips the gold on the uni's looks a lot more gold than yellow.

Lol yeah, the lighting

Yes please..We know CPR is a traditional guy, one wonders how much different of a direction they will go in? Just a new helmet please please please

I agree our helmets suck and are pretty lame...Dave Hoppmann wouldn't be caught dead wearing one of these pieces of headgear.....

Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner. ISU used to have absolutely classic uniforms back in the day. Build from them. Cardinal and gold - think Niners.

Lol i can only imagine if we tried to implement gold back into our color schemes. Not only would there be 50 shades of red in the crowd, but also an influx of gold's, yellow's, blacks, grays, and that guy in your section that still wears his 90's navy blue swishy pull over, seriously **** that guy.

I dislike Iowa as much as the next guy but its awesome when they pull off the black and yellow alternating sections. We could never do that effectively because said guy above is still wearing his ****n blue pull over....

Quickly chiming in here. Still think the Jack Trice jerseys should be utilized as Notre Dame does with their special green jerseys. ISU admittedly has a meager tradition, so let's build on what we do have. Although the 2013 Trice throwbacks execution had some, ah, interesting choices ...

I agree. The photo of the 49er helmet (which looks like one of their older versions) is bright with a white background while the Bruce era helmet looks like it was taken in dim light with a black background. Lighting can make a big difference in appearance as I'm sure you know. The photo of the 49er helmet looks much less gold than the color of their actual helmets or their gold color. I know, I've got some of their authentic gear.

Hate ketchup and mustard. Just go deeper on the red and more gold on the yellow. Helmets suck too.

haha. Well you actually hit the answer to our mustard gold color. The reason we can't ever go back to a true gold shade is because long ago the San Fransico 49ers purchased the rights to ISUs gold color scheme. Just do some searching on it. Way back when. Hence the reason for our switch to the Ronald McDonald yellow. wts, I totally agree with others that CPR needs to change things up and get with the times and what draws recruits interest they want to look cool. That was one of the first things Briles did at Baylor.
Can you stop with this "we can't use 49ers colors because they bought the color scheme" bull**** already? The 49ers have been using that red and gold since their inception in the 1940s. ISU used and stopped using that color scheme in the 1960s. ONE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OTHER. I mean, because no team has EVER used similar color schemes.

Absolutely agree with this. Conceptually those unis were stunning. The version used on the field, however, were quite terrible. Not to mention it was proven sometime last year that the "Jack Trice concept" was wrong - it was not a cardinal jersey with gold stripes, but a bright yellow jersey with gray stripes. As cool as the concept was, the whole thing became a dumpster fire (including the play on the field) and I would just prefer the idea be left in the past.

Please. I don't care how tough the guy was, if ISU was paying his tuition he would wear whatever he was told to wear on the field.

I bet a "chrome" gold stencil on a metallic red helmet would look killer:

Or use these uniforms with updated font and current logo:
