Those are sweet!

Now, take these two helmets, and combine them with cardinal, gold, and white jerseys, and cardinal, gold, and white pants, and bingo.... we are set forever. That would give you a LOT of possible uniform combos right there.

Someone with better math skills could tell us all exactly how many different combos there are with 2 helmets, 3 jerseys, and 3 pant colors.

2 X 3 X 3 = 18

IMO, the updated 80's 'tornado' logo looks like it should be used for a drain cleaner. Further, it is from a (another) terrible era in ISU football. Blast away. . .

well if iowa state designed their brand around successful football seasons, there wouldnt be much to work with so this argument is worthless. imagine this being a real conversation:

'why does your team cling to that ugly navy blue from the coach mac era?'

'oh...well, we were kinda good for a couple months when that was part of our color scheme so we kept it as a constant reminder of our short lived success.'

not to mention the fact that the depressing nostalgia you have for a team in the 80s means nothing to the next generation of cyclones. although it would be an interesting rule if schools were forced to change their logo each year they recorded a losing record.

I think "Walking Cy" is the most timeless of trademarks. Too bad the Blue Crows kept their old logo; walking Cy is pretty similar.

I think the tornado logo is sweet, but as a secondary logo. I think the I-State is pretty well recognized around the country (mainly because of the basketball team) so we should run with that. Definitely use this tornado in place of the Bucky cy and bird head hurricane. Those logos actually make me mad because they've ruined a lot of cool apparel by slapping those on there.

I understand the 80s argument but have to side with Amestoplease on this one, we've never been very successful.

Also, great job on these new designs. Really like having 18 different combos. The gray uniforms that were posted earlier in that Twitter link were sick as well.

The funnel logo is AN ACTUAL CYCLONE. It's the best logo we've ever had once you cut off the cursive "Iowa State" and blow it up on the helmet. Resurrecting the Criner curse is such a dumb argument. We're cursed anyways. Throw in walking Cy with our current logo and that should be our identity. Cy doesn't need to be a Tazmanian devil.

Yeah, I was never a big fan of the Criner era funnel logo with the cursive "Iowa State" above it at all. I know some people liked those, but I didn't at all.

But for some reason I love this new design with just the funnel only. JP wants to create an identity, so what better way to do that can there possibly be than to embrace being the only college team in the nation with the nickname of "Cyclones"?

JP always has said that nobody knew who we were when we had the swirling bird logo. Well, guess what Jamie, nobody knows who we are with the "I State" logo either. Are we Iowa State, Illinois State, Idaho State, Indiana State.... which is it?

We will only ever be known because we have dominant football and basketball teams, not because of our logo. So in the meantime, if you truly want to create an identity, embrace the fact we have a unique nickname that nobody else has. There are about 50 or 60 teams in the country that are the "Hawks", but only one team that are the "Cyclones".

If you want to make it a secondary logo to the "I State", then fine, but we can still put it on our helmets. It's so much cleaner and classy looking than just some letters on our helmet IMO.

Well I think the current logo looks fantastic when stenciled on a helmet like the mockup Kagavi did. So much so that I changed my avatar.

Michigan's official logo is the giant block "M," but they don't put it on their helmet. Florida State has a Seminole logo, but puts a spear on their lids. Alabama has the cursive "A" & an elephant mascot, but uses neither in favor of numbers. Notre Dame, Penn State, Colorado State- see where I'm going with this? We can have our cake and eat it too. Mix it up. Use the block I-State as our midfield logo & put the funnel on the helmet. Put the block logo on a pair of gloves. On special occasions reverse it. Wear chrome gold for prime time night games against Texas. Commemorate Clay Stapleton by donning walking Cy for a game. Etc.

Bingo! Couldn't agree more.

Stick with the "I State" as the primary, but go with the newly designed funnel logo on the helmet. And if you want to, on occasion, change the helmet logo to the "I State" or the retro Walking Cy, then fine.... just like Okie St sometimes puts their Pistol guy mascot on their helmet.... although I would stick with the funnel logo 90% of the time at least.

Regarding the "stain" of the Criner-era Cyclone logo, I respect that it may trigger some negative opinions, hence the redesign by "amestoplease" that moves it another step forward.

Besides, you know what else happened during the time of that logo? Johnny Orr, Barry Stevens, Jeff Grayer, and the birth of Hilton Magic as well as ISU's first NCAA tournament appearance in 41 years. Perhaps we should not think of that '80s logo as just the Criner logo, but rather as the Johnny Orr/Hilton Magic logo too. Today ISU announces the introduction of a new secondary logo honoring our 120 year old Cyclones nickname as well as inspired by our tradition of Johnny Orr and the birth of Hilton Magic. Who says no to that?

To my recollection, the basketball team never used the "thong in a blender" logo, they used the cardinal with the basketball

Correct, they mostly used the secondary logo of Cy dribbling a ball, mostly because they already had the IOWA STATE wording on the jersey. However, the cursive Iowa State with the Cyclone was essentially the school logo at the time.

Poked around eBay and quickly found this key fob with the 1983-84 basketball schedule on it and the logo on it. It was in February 1983 that Barry Stevens had the famous game-winning shot against Missouri that was the start of Hilton Magic, so I think it's accurate to claim this logo is from that era and should be thought of as such.

(I'm right there with you if we want to discuss a change to the current CY logo, but that's a whole another thread.)

Good arguments on the Criner-era logo being in the same period as early Hilton Magic. I didn't think of it that way before. And once the cursive lettering is removed, the tornado logo doesn't look so dated.

A few years ago, my sister found a Criner-logo coffee cup, it has a vintage feel to it, and I use it all the time at home (my at-work cup is Mac-period cy-nado with the Iowa State lettering (as opposed to the ISU that was used on helmet).

If designers would have nixed the typeface on these logos, they look fine.
