New music tradition?

I think Bells both before and after is a bit overkill.

I like it at the end. I remember when the team purposely changed to standing in front of the band because many games the students were already gone. And I think it’s a bit of a nod to the full day of work the band puts in which I at least cherish. That half time show was top notch. I think they went all out for the Irish delegation.

I can only take so much speaker blasting as well and Jackie was back to full scream. The other defense of having Bells before too is the crowd tends to need to settle before the National Anthem. Most ignore when the flag enters and exits the field but I think Bells there settles at least a few.

I still don't really understand this viewpoint (besides the penis part). As @loyalsons4evertrue noted, it happens before the National Anthem. To the extent that it does kill the mood (which is a fan choice, IMO--a lot of schools get excited about their alma mater song), the only way it has a real effect is if it kills the mood more than the National Anthem would by itself and continues to do so all the way through the team entrance to kickoff, which I don't think it does.
I went to a game against Oklahoma State in 2022 in Stillwater and their entire fan base sang the alma mater....we are like the one school that actively hates our alma mater (I don't, but that's the vibe I get from people on this forum and in general).

I think placing it before the national anthem was a good move...it used to be played after the national anthem and I can understand the "kill the vibe" thing. Much better now.

100%, Every away game i've gone to I'm blown away how much their schools cherish their alma mater song. I went to TCU their first season in the big 12 and their whole stadium stands and sings it before the game. It is treated on the same level as the national anthem it felt like . Can vouch for OK St basketball games too.

I personally like the bells of Iowa State, but certainly was a bit of a culture shock seeing how other schools view their alma mater song.

It's even kind of sad that current students and alumni don't even know the lyrics....not sure how these other schools do it with teaching freshmen but maybe DIS could do something like that when they do their pep rally stuff for the freshmen class.

K-State fans also are super engaged with their alma mater...kind of helps that there's a "K-S-U" chant in theirs.

At Notre Dame, the Alma Mater is a prayer. It’s always sung at Mass on football weekends.

Bells has a lot more meaning to me since the Jack Trice 100 remembrance. I read about his widow hearing the bells ring at 3:00 when he died. Now I always think of him when I hear Bells at the stadium that bears his name.
