New Iowa Coach

This is exactly what I was hoping would happen. Half of the Iowa fans don't want him and the other half are disappointed that he's not Coach K. Hopefully in 5 years they are running out another coach.

He's a decent coach but has really had little D1 Head Coaching experience. He's done great at Butler and had an amazing year from start to finish. I just don't know if he's ready to jump from the Horizon League to the Big Ten without a lay-over in between. Matta was successful after his short stint at Butler but that doesn't mean it works that way for everyone.

Good coach, great fundamentals, unknown recruiting ability, very little name awareness and not much excitement surrounding the hire.

Regarding Jeremy's last statement. If you re-read what you wrote regarding Lickliter and his qualities they sound very similar to McDermott except for the excitement surrounding the hire.

McD does have more head coaching experienc then Lickliter... Also the ISU fan base was sort of divided with the hire, many people wanted Jeter or someone else. Since then the fan base has come together, this is most likely accredited to his recruiting success and having a "good" first year.

We will see tomorrow who the actual coach is going to be, if you anything you learn not to trust who the media says it is the day before, give it until about 4 or hours before the press conference to judge who it is!

I agree there is a similarity but GMac was obviously well known around here to help with excitement and he has a personality that ensured he'd be loved from day one. GMac is really an odd situation just because he was absolutely perfect for ISU at exactly the right time. Everybody relates to him at some level and his personality makes recruits love him almost as much as the natives.

With Iowa and Lickliter, he has no excitement around his name in Iowa and nobody really knows how he'll be able to woo the crowd that's already pretty picky. I think he has great coaching abilities but that doesn't mean he'll have the support he needs from the fans. One could say he has to have time to prove himself but I ask; will Iowa fans will give him time and support?

This is about as strong of a hire as anybody could have expected. For the reigning NABC Coach of the Year to leave his alma mater for a team and a fan base in as much turmoil as Iowa is a bold move on his part. Unfortunately for him, he now steps into one of the toughest coaching jobs in the country: a severely rebuilding (to put it nicely) team with a fan base that expects the final four. If anybody can deliver at Iowa, Lickliter's probably the man. But that's a pretty big if.

Am I the only one that's hoping that Barta just holds this press conference to tell everyone that they have, so far, only received one application, and now they're reaching to the high school coaches?

EDIT: ooooh. 999, I'd better not waste my next post.

Iowa fans are positively ******** if they aren't excited. They hired the NABC coach of the year, a Butler alum, who has been to the Sweet 16 twice. McDermott couldn't say that.

Hats off for Iowa if they did,
two things we know though:
Mac will still beat Iowa,
and the fans will still screw it up and chase him off
