NCAA Tournament Brackets and Draws

Most of the results were fair. He had Terukina losing in OT to Mastro, Ian has struggled recently, and then Yonger losing 9-8 to Amos. However, I think we win 4 (Carr, Coleman, Bastida, and then one of Parker/Degen)
I agree. I have Carr, Coleman and Yonger all winning. Then one more victory, but think it could come at 25, 33, 41, or 49. I’m leaning towards 25 or 49 as most likely. Degen needs to open it up and make mcDougle wrestle. If he lets it be a 3-2 type match he’s losing.

Ian needs a more committed leg attack. Grabbing the knee when in a tie up rarely works or needs to operate from space to get the snatch single.

Here are my picks:

ISU related
125 - 1-2. Think he's in a tough spot. The win could come against Mastro, or if he loses that one he'll pick up a win on the backside. Do not like he'd either have Latona or Schroeder in 2nd round of Consis.
133 - 0-2. He could pick up a win, but who knows.
141 - 1-2. Think he loses first round, picks up a win on the backside but then runs into Chad Red in second round consis.
149 - 2-2. Wins first round and picks up another on the backside.
157 - Champ
174 - 0-2
184 - I have Coleman getting 6th. Loses in the quarters to Amine. Then on the backside gets Loew of Cornel and Venz of Nebraska. Loses to Hidlay in consi semis and then has Romero for 5th.
197 - 3-2 loses in bloodround. Have him getting knocked off by Elam on the frontside. winning 2 on the backside before facing Bonaccorsi in the blood round. If he were to beat Elam and then lose to Buchanon, I'd have him falling into Woodley on the backside. So I think the same result of a bloodround loss either way.
285 - 1-2. Loses first round and then wins one in the wrestlebacks before getting knocked out by Traxler.

Team - ISU is 12th with 36 team points. Just behind Minnesota and Wisconsin. PSU runs away with it with 126 points. Mich and Iowa tied for 2nd at 97.5 points. I think injuries hurt Iowa and they get less than expected from Kem and Eierman.

Champs:
Suriano
Fix
Lee
Yianni
Carr
Wick
Starocci
Brooks
Dean
Gable

Kysen’s path to place. Beat a banged up Mastro, beat DeAugustino, lose to Vito, beat Ayala, Heinselman, or Cardinale. He has to beat 3 guys that are right on his level. It’s absolutely possible, but I’m not sure how likely. We will find out. I still think he lacks the strength to finish some of these shots he gets in on but can’t convert.

Ian in the semi finals and I’m not surprised. Ian going 1-2 and I’m not surprised.

Parker beats Filius, lose to Woods and he would have Red or Dresden Simon. That’s not a good draw. Then if he wins he would have Composto or NDSU kid. Luckily if he gets through all that we could see him wrestle an ACL-less Eierman in R12. What I would give to see him best Eierman in R12 to place his final year. Icing on the cake.

Official (100% cardinal-colored glasses on) Picks:

ISU:
125: 8th place. Takes our Mastro and DeAugustino to get to the quarters, gets Tech'd by Vito, then beats Heinselman in the blood round. Falls to Eric Barnett to drop to the 7/8 place match, then gets beat by Brandon Kaylor to take 8th.

133: 1-2, loses first round match, beats Courtney from Virginia, then falls to Cannon from Northwestern.

141: 7th place. Loses first round match to Filius before going on a major run in the consis. Takes our McGonagle, then Red, then Composto, and beats Allan Hart in the blood round before falling to Real Woods. He beats Cole Matthews from Pitt to take 7th and ends his career as an all-american for the Clones.

149: 7th place. Degen finally beats McDougald in the first round before dropping an entertaining match against Yianni. In the consis, Degen takes our Artalona to start, finds a way to get passed Gfeller to make the blood round, and then gasses Yahya Thomas and picks up a late takedown to AA. He falls to Ridge Lovett, but gets revenge against Kyle Parco in the 7/8 place match. The mantis wins 5 matches leading to a nice donation from CF posters to the CRTC.

157: Champ. Majors Holschlag to start, then has workmanlike decisions against Berge, Young, and Monday to make the finals. Tied 1-1 late in the 3rd, but Deakin with riding time, David gets in on a low single and finishes with 14 seconds left and rides Deakin out to become a 2 time NCAA champ.

174: 0-2. Joel loses a decision to Labs, and then loses a tight match to Nijenhuis in the consis. He wrestles hard but just can't quit get a takedown in the 3rd to beat Nijenhuis.

184: 5th place. Marcus takes care of business against Battista and Braunagel before losing a 3 point match to Amine in the quarters. I have Loew beating Munoz on the championship side, so tough draw for Marcus, but he gets it done in the blood round against the 6 seed to become an AA. He then wins a tight match against Truax to make the consi semis, but falls to Trent Hidlay there. He beats Kaleb Romero to get 5th and concludes a fantastic tournament.

197: 6th place. Yonger wins a tight match against Amos first round, and then wins for the third time in a row against Elam in the 2nd round. He gives up a late takedown to Buchanon in the quarters, but knocks of Bonaccorsi in the blood round. He then takes our Warner to advance to the consi semis, but loses to Sloan 2-0 after Sloan rides him the entire 3rd. Yonger has Elam again for 5/6, but falls this time to Rocky (and their rivalry strengthens going into next season).

Hwt: 1-2. Sam loses first round, but picks up a win in the consis over Isaac Reid. He falls to Traxler the next round, but takes momentum to the offseason after a better than expected season.

Team: With 6 AAs and 1 champ, the team scores 68 points and finishes 6th in the race shocking everybody. Dresser rides the momentum to score some key 2023 recruits along with big name transfers at 133, 149 (Demas perhaps?), and 174 putting us in a position to challenge for a trophy in Tulsa in 2023.

NCAA Champs:

I love the Wrestlestat wrestler comparison tool :)

Round 1 Thoughts
125. Kysen is 1-1 vs Mastro...IF he wrestles a clean match and wins he essentially takes over the 7 seed
133. Ramazan can pull the upset in first round. I like his chances. He also looked great at Big 12's.
141. Parker has a tougher draw than Ramazan IMO. That said, I like his seed & think he can win a R1 shootout and make the podium.
149. Degen has lost 2 close matches to McDougald... He can win that match IMO (toss up for sure). I'm pickung an upset and think JD can pull out a W.
157. Carr needs to do what Carr does = Bonus points :)
174. Devine is the biggest underdog R1 IMO. Needs to keep it close and try to win by Riding Time
184. Marcus = Bonus points :) I also like his seed and think he makes to podium.
197. Yonger is a slight favorite. I'm a bit nervous here but hope he can get rolling on his feet early so he doesn't have to worry about choosing down. WBD
Hwt. Sam is the second biggest underdog IMO. However I think this could be a close match if he can find a way to finish a takedown or two.

I have 3 matches I'd consider us favorites (157,184, 197), 2 matches I'd consider us clear dogs (174, Hwt) and the remaining 4 are all toss ups & winnable if our guys get on a roll. Round 1 could be a LOT of fun!

Even with my Cyclone rose color glasses on I don’t see Kysen any better than 2-2. If I were a betting man I would bet he’ll never make it past the blood round in his time as a Cyclone. Sorry JMO lots of improvement necessary. He can do it but he has a ways to go to compete with the elite. Hope I’m way off!

I hope your way off too. He has built an impressive resume so far IMO:
> R. Freshman
> 2x NCAA qualifier (already)
> already has a W over returning AA (Cardinale)
> 4 years to compete at the NCAA's (including this year)

He's young, strong, solid in all positions, very athletic. and super quick. Just needs to learn to continue to wrestle through certain positions IMO. If he continues to improve he could win it all. I'm predicting him to be a multi AA before his career as a Cyclone is over.

I see where you are coming from @OKClones but he does have some nice wins over Liam Cronin, Jesse Ybarra, Mastro and Cardinale this year. I think he has proven he can beat guys of the caliber to AA. Now he just has to put it together in the tournament. This is why I disagree with coaches not sending our guys to a big tournament like Southern Scuffle, CKLV or Matmen Open. I think Kysen, Parker, Devine, Bastida all could've benefited from a big tournament this year.

The “Virtual NCAAs” Twitter account (@Vncaas, if interested) has only Carr and Coleman winning their 1st round matches. Carr by TF over UNI and Coleman by decision.

I realize this is just a “fun” thing for the people who run that account, but not much faith in our guys there.

Loves our guys in the RD 1 Consi.

Has Devine going 0-2. Everyone else still alive and likes bonus.

It’s a fun follow.

You said it perfectly we need to see it in tournaments. Putting together multiple solid matches. In 2 years his results don’t come close to a podium wrestler in the tournaments. I want to see it as bad as anyone, I’m just not convinced yet.

A little well-deserved recognition and love from Intermat and Earl Smith:

"Extreme (+20 seed) Darkhorse All-American Contender: #26 Kysen Terukina (Iowa State)

Last year, Kysen Terukina was the very last seed at 125 lbs. He proceeded to go 0-2, as one may expect from that position. What wasn't expected was that Terukina would elevate himself to the upper echelon of Big 12 contenders. Despite his seed and the need for an at-large in a Big 12 weight class that automatically qualified six, Terukina is an All-American threat. Terukina started the year by winning 17 of his first 18 matches and logging victories over the fifth and seventh seeds here. With a resume that includes Cardinale and Mastrogiovanni, Terukina is capable of beating almost anyone here."

So as a non wrestling guy, who doesnt follow it at all. Whats our expectation for ISU here? Do they have a shot at winning the title? No shot at all? What would be a good result? 2nd, 3rd 5th?

Ive just no idea how to even follow it really.

Zero chance of finishing top 4. Their best would be 6-8 range if they wrestled lights out. Realistically they should finish 9-13th range. Hopeful to break the top 10 which is a great accomplishment right now in turning the program around

Anywhere in the top 10 would be awesome. It’s doable.

If your new, Watch David Carr on Saturday night in the finals. He’s one the best wrestlers to ever put on Cyclone singlet and an absolute stud.

Non wrestling guy here too. Just a big fan, especially tournament time. Take some time and watch the ESPN coverage, you won’t regret it. You will probably end up following ISUwresting Twitter or checking the fanatic thread for results when not by a TV.
Follow all the ISU guys close but enjoy all the matches. March Madness is great but Mat Madness can be even better. Best weekend of the year for sports.
