In a new league that allowed for direct payments to players you don't need to commit the crimes that got these guys in trouble, not to mention would slow up the arms race spending on facilities.

I was talking to a KU fan yesterday, and he pretty much admitted they were shady (he noted the Mario Chalmers stuff), but didn't think they would get wrapped up in this.
I think I would rather have KU get by, but then have to recruit on a more level playing field. It's a blast competing with them when we have a good team.
Here's the thing - in recent years, I don't think he's done anything on the recruiting side other than exploit the loopholes created by the NCAA rules. Kentucky is the school for one and done talent. I will admit that how he got it to that point might be a different story, and God knows what's happening on the academic side of things at UK to keep players eligible and the programs overall GPA in good standing.
Cal's got a LOT of practice at this. I won't be surprised when he dodges this and takes an NBA job.
He has a lot of practice dodging the NCAA...we'll see how good he is against the FBI.
People keep wanting to equate this to an NCAA investigation, this is a whole new animal.
That is a bad example. The Chalmers thing was perfectly legal. Basically just like Missouri hiring the Porter dad.

I assume they have some work to do with lawyers right now to formalize things and avoid a buyout and legal challenge.
So what are the chances that this brings down the NCAA compliance office? I kind of see this instance as similar to the Equifax databreach. NCAA compliance needed to thoroughly investigate and enforce punishments to deter future offenses. Instead, they allowed schools to carry on and effectively become breached by external influences (financial advisers and clothing sponsors) and it took the federal government to bring all these issues to the forefront. If this turns out as bad as we all think it will, then Mark Emmert should get the boot and so should everyone in the NCAA compliance offices
Yes, they have to give him a 10 day notice per his contract.
I believe it was a Chicago recruit and the mother had never been out of Cook County and it was well known that she didn't want her baby going too far away. So when she asked where Iowa State was he said that it was "just down the road" or something like that.
Perhaps his one and done philosophies/tactics are such a selling point that he doesn't need to be dirty this time.

This is not something the NCAA compliance office could have done. They have no power to do anything if they don't have people cooperating.
That, the Kentucky name, and $EC boosters let him get off with plausible deniability.
Well, that's kind of why I said shady instead of something harsher. It sounds like it wasn't just hiring his father either.
