NBA Draft 2014

Take away Lebron's strength and what do you have?

A solid shooter who can still jump out of the gym and outrun 95% of the players currently in the league and has an insanely high basketball IQ. LeBron wouldn't be LeBron without his strength, but he'd still be damn good.

But the point is that Kane's physical advantage was, in most cases, due to his being much older than his competition. Being 4 years older when you're talking about guys aged 30-26 isn't such a big deal. Being 4 years older when the younger guys are still maturing physically is a huge advantage that Kane won't enjoy in the NBA (at least not very often). The playing field between Kane and his competitors is going to get more level; that's just a fact. The chances of someone making the playing field between LBJ and the rest of the league are pretty low. Nobody else has the kind of skills/talents/gifts he has, and it's likely that no one will anytime soon.

Well, today was probably the best day for Iowa basketball since the day Steve Alford left.

No matter what, marble should have not got drafted over kane.....pathetic

You can keep repeating this all you want, but you were fooling yourself if you thought this would play out any differently. You can think the age factor is ridiculous, but that sort of thing DOES factor heavily into NBA GM's thought processes.

NBA draft is youth and potential. That's what it's about. Youth and potential. It's not about who was the better player last year, last night, or even next month. It's about youth and potential. (unless a team drafts a foreign guy who won't play in the US for a couple years. Then it's about cap space) Just drill that into your head. That's how the NBA draft goes.

He has 10x the potential of Kane? 10x the potential of a first team All Big 12 player who outplayed Marcus Smart? It's kind of a ridiculous statement to make. He has 10x the potential of some message board posters, he doesn't have 10x the potential of any elite college players.

A lot of the talk predraft was that Kane has maximized his potential. What you see is what you get, with very little room for improvement. That remains to be seen, but looking at it that way, then yes, it's easy for someone to have 10x more potential than someone who has very little potential improvement left.

Kane had probably one chance at getting drafted, and that was Miami not getting Napier or Early not falling to New York. I'd rather they go the Garrett/Babb route. Better chance of making a team if you can pick where you're going based on need and opportunity.

The NFL draft drills the whole "take the best player available" logic into our heads. And that's good... for football. The NBA is a different beast entirely. The best available isn't always the best choice.

Then I think 10x the potential is a silly way of phrasing that. 10x more room for improvement would make sense because the kid was a bench player in college, of course he can improve a lot if he didn't start in college. 10x the potential means he could be an exponentially better and no college player has 10x the potential of any other elite college player. People get a little carried away with extremes on all views here…and I know this isn't the most NBA savvy board to begin with.

You know, with all of what's being said here, my only thought is "I'm disappointed for our guys, that they didn't get to hear their names called". THAT is what sucks to me. I believe they will have a chance as free agents, but dammit, I wanted them to get that thrill.

Marble has neither youth or potential.

Marble's dad was battling serious addiction when Marble was conceived. So you have to imagine that addiction is a much higher risk for Marble, and what is the one place that he probably shouldn't be? Yes that's right, the weed capital of the world. This isn't going to end well.

People should think of it something like NBA teams take on 1.25 rookies a year. Still…if they hit gold with mid to late first or second round picks, they have the best deal in the NBA for a few seasons. Kawhi Leonard for the Spurs is a HUGE $ value still getting #15 pick money. Look at what Taj Gibson made for the Bulls his first few years of great production as a late first rounder. The second rounders who pan out are an even better deal.

You realize that Marble was traded to Orlando, right?

I think people are just disappointed after all the respect and hype we got all year to not have it directly pan out via the draft. If anything, that just says more about us than we think. We had a great win streak to start the season off going undefeated non-con and taking down 2 top 10 teams before facing our first loss, we won the Big 12 tourney, and pushed hard even with a key injury to make the Sweet 16. All of this when some analysts pegged us to finish near the bottom of our conference. We did this all without any NBA draftees. That speaks volumes to the commitment of our players to push and develop into the best they can be, of our coaching staff to harness the most of our talent, and of our program to bring us back into the national spotlight.

Come on people, just because we didn't have 2 of our players drafted doesn't mean the respect isn't there. Hilton is in the Top 10 toughest arenas to play in, and we are Preseason Top 20 with several new players on the way in. No one is underestimating Iowa State basketball. I have no doubt with their work ethics that both Kane and Ejim have the potential to succeed in the NBA.

I think it says more to what the NBA has become and why I watch very little of it now. The NBA is the ultimate bottom line league. Why should I pick someone up who will just cost me more money to win, when I can put "X" on the table, collect my money and become mediocre.

I think it was emphasized tonight when they kept talking about the Bulls and how everyone fits in with Rose. Not one thing from that guy, day one, says he's going to be there at the end of next season. I know he's the franchise player and all according to the NBA experts, but the guy has yet to play a full season without being hurt. His recent history to me, says this year will be worse than the last, so we might want to think about another franchise player instead of conserving for the cap.

One thing this draft made me realize was how glad I am the World Cup was this year. I now have another pro sport to pay attention to other than the NBA.

Wow. I must have missed all that weed on the way to Epcot.

Hope Chicago is a team that takes a look at Kane. Bulls need pg help and he's just as good as the guys the bulls called pg's this season.
