NSCR: NASCAR 2024 thread

That 2nd line lost some momentum on the first lap but then got a real head of steam going on the back stretch.

Yes he got his 1st win tonight but he was already a winner in my book if you know what I mean:

Just go back to how it was before the gimmicks. The season as a whole should determine the champion.

When I started watching racing in the 90s (and all series not only NASCAR) I was brought up such that championships were the "icing on the cake" but not the main point of the competition.

The main point was to win races. Period.

Each race was a self-contained "season" of its own. You're a legend for winning Le Mans, Daytona, and/or Sebring, not because you won whatever IMSA championship. You're a legend for winning Indy and not some CART or IRL championship and a legend for winning races like Monaco, Monza, and Spa, though NASCAR and F1 did have at least something in common that championships do have at least some clout.

I always liked racing for individual moments and great races rather than "playoff hunts." Give me a great Daytona 500 with a memorable finish or a similar race at Charlotte, Darlington, and Talladega.

The outlook contrasted strongly with how many other professional sports are framed and marketed... everything is building towards a final championship. MJ is better than LeBron because he has more championship. Brady is the GOAT because he has the most championships. The Yankees are the most storied team in baseball because they've won the World Series the most. Racing was more about the journey and less about the destination as it is when we're waiting for the Super Bowl or NBA Finals or March Madness.

Rather than embracing being a bit different like that, NASCAR tried to change it. Thought it might improve their traditionally sagging ratings in the fall once football starts back up after the long hot summer.

Didn't work. Seems to have backfired badly.

Probably never was going to work, though.

The round of 12 wrapped up yesterday. Initially all 4 Hendrick cars were in but Bowman's car failed the post race inspection so he was disqualified.
