"Mystery Candidates"

If its true that they were Marshall for around $4mill and Altman for around $3mill, I can see why Pollard would choose Prohm for $1.5mill. There are a lot of coaches that make less than $3mill that I would rather have than those two.

This. Marshall at $4 million would have been ridiculous. He's had success, but this is still an MVC coach we're talking about here. $4 million a year puts him amongst the highest paid coaches in the country. There's still plenty of question about whether he can hack it in a power conference.

I think he had a pretty good response, with his win against KU this year.

But I agree, $4 million would be too much for Marshall. I like Prohm better, anyway.

That was one game, against a banged up and fading Kansas team. They got smoked by Notre Dame the next round.

Nah, $4 mill is too much for Marshall, and $3 mill is too much for Altman. I'm good with what we got.

Notre Dame also almost took out Kentucky, before Wisconsin finished the job. I think Marshall could hang in a power conference, just fine.

$4 million is an awful lot of money to risk on the potential validity of the transitive property of Notre Dame's close loss.

The guy has exactly two regular season wins against top 25 teams in the last 3 years. And both of those teams were in his conference. There are definite questions as to whether or not Marshall would be successful in a power conference. He is a great coach, but by no means a lock to be successful at the highest level. And to pay someone top 10 money, he'd have to be a sure thing, in my mind. Gregg isn't that.

Marshall would have been interesting. I was in favor for overpaying for a name candidate. So I suppose I would have been in favor of $4 million for Marshall. But....and this isn't justifying who we got.....I think Marshall is a pretty big *******.

At what dollar amount is Marshall in? He is a pretty good coach with MVC talent. Hmm. I think he might have been worth over 3 and probably 4. Especially if you can keep him under 5 for 4 years. But what do I know. Is the only reason Pollard didn't pull the trigger because he wanted to save the football program? His call!

Imo he is worth $4.

I don't mind the Prohm hire if Marshall and Altman were the mystery hires, but getting Marshall to ISU would have been pretty f***ing exciting. Paying $3 million for Altman would have gotten a huge yawn from me though.

Cut the T&F budget.

He is worth $4 million. Whether we can afford $4 million is another question. We will lose just as much with a non-splash hire failing imo, but hopefully that is irrelevant.

I just don't think so. Here are the top 25 wins that Marshall has had in the last 3 years
Kansas
UNI
Creighton
Gonzaga
Ohio State

3 of those were in the tournament.

Don't get me wrong, he's a great coach, but that's not the resume of a $4million a year coach.

Please excuse me if this is a stupid question, but did Marshall succeed pre-CleAnthony Early, Baker, and Van Vleet? If not we may be over-rating him IMO.
