No, not the dirty east-side hairstyle. The new restaraunt/bar to open in the downtown Des Moines area. Anybody had a chance to try it yet? It's owned by the Full Court Press guys, they also own High Life, El Bait Shop, Hessen House, Royal Mile, Fong's and the Red Monk. I haven't had a chance to try out Mullets yet but based on how well they run their other places I have high hopes for this one. Unlike Smithson the Full Court guys usually run a tight ship and the food and atmosphere is always great at their other establishments. Anyway, here's a link to Des Moines Metromix taking about the place.

Not really downtown...its actually across the river on dirty stinky southside, where the mullet and meth teeth are worn proudly.

edit: looking at the photo gallery of Mullets and Fat Tony's the southside should be renamed New Jersey.

I have been to Mullets.

Great patio areas, one up high and one down low. Both have a great view of Sec Taylor and downtown, though the top one is particularly nice. The menu has some good selections. We had spicy fried catfish as an appetizer and everyone in my group enjoyed their Po'Boys. I had a tasty crawfish and shrimp one, one guy had catfish, one a chicken philly and one a Sandberg, a bacon-wrapped sausage covered in cheese and chili on a bun. Again, all were delicious and I'm looking forward to going back to try some other menu items.

We were there the night of Game 7 and went inside to watch the second half, and they have one huge flat screen on a wall, which was a bit unexpected and a nice touch.

My only complaint is that pitchers were 9 bucks.

Southside is not bad. Your thinking East Side with the Mullets and Meth. Southside are Italians and Pretty guys. Not sure what southside you are talking about.

It's called Principal Park, not Sec Taylor.

The southside bottoms, or Southie as I call it. Exactly the neighborhood Mullet's is in. Easily worse than anything on the east side, and yes, home to mullets and meth teeth.

And $9 pitchers? What the hell?

Wrong. The best food in Des Moines is right in that area. Tumea's and Graziano's sausage. Not to mention it's little Italy down there and not white trash.

I'm not denying that. I love Tumea's, but it's still not a great neighborhood.

Before he died, Big Daddy's BBQ was arguably one of the best BBQ joints in DM, but it wasn't in a great neighborhood. You're not selling your point very well here.

Kinda what I was thinking. Tumea's, Graziano's, Fat Tony's and a couple other decent places right around there. New bridges and trails in that area, it's not that bad and only getting better.

It's not all brand new and chain restaurants like West Glen, but I certainly wouldn't be scared walking around there at night.

I wouldn't be scared either, but I think you guys are confusing the issue. Once you get up the hill from the river, yes the neighborhoods improve and there's plenty of reputable joints, but despite the fact that Tumea's (a place I love by the way) and Graziano's are nearby, it still isn't a great neighborhood, especially when you look at property values, activity in the police blotter and the overall aesthetic.
 
Well looks like we've cleaned this one up.

In summary

Southside=Nebraska

Eastside=Texas, we didnt start this but we'll sure as hell finish it.
