Exactly. There’s a reason why there’s nothing over there.
Not much of a population west of the Hyvee to support anything.
I took my family to the Ankeny Mullets recently and enjoyed a great dinner. Food was good and the service was too!
I agree based on trends but as someone who lives west of Ames Hy-Vee, I feel like there are a lot of houses that could support a restaurant. Wallaby’s was out there on an Island for years…
Summerset does a good job serving the north side of Ames. Problem with Summerset is there is no good way to get out there unless you live there. 10-15 minute drive from any of the main entrances into Ames that aren't Hwy 69 from the north. And that's if you don't hit any traffic.
That's why I never go out there.
And Wallaby's moved out. And a West Cyd Wings died, and Shogun died. Minsky's tried to make a go at it. Cazador was a staple for years and closed. Even Wendy's left for greener pastures.
Unless it's around Duff Ave, it's a roll of the dice and the house loaded them.
There have been two or three restaurants other than WTP in the strip mall south of Kum& Go on Mortensen since 2011 as well.
I will say that the dynamic of West Ames has changed quite a bit as there are more houses going up constantly, but it is still dominated by college students. Unless you live there, there just isn't any draw to West Ames and most college students are looking for cheap fast food or a bar.
Well there used to AAU basketball tournaments in that area. That’d be so annoying, I’d need gas or something and that k&C lot is completely full.
I’ve tried putting retail spaces under some apartments on West Lincoln way and those have sat empty for the most part.
I get the frustration from the students and west Ames residences that live out there but there’s only 1 group of people that frequent that area and it’s people that are living there.
It’s really as simple as looking at a map, find the west Ames Hyvee or even look at Hyland Ave, and look at the amount of houses/neighborhoods west then compare it to the rest of Ames. It’s not that complicated as to why there’s nothing in west Ames. Not enough people to support much.

Using Hyland as the east to west "line", is fine. I Live in west Ames its not like getting around town is hard. Northern Lights is a business killer for whatever reason, but their is plenty of places in Somerset.
It will always be Sec Taylor Stadium
People must assume that strip mall is associated with Northern Lights Pizza and stay the hell away from it. Can't blame them that pizza blows.
Why are you so butt hurt it was just a comment on stadium like did it hurt you that much you needed to make two comments on it.
