Mullets restaurant is franchising, including Ames location

At the wrestling CRTC event a couple weeks ago, one of Mullets servers said they are going into an existing location in Ames but wouldn’t say where. Found out from a buddy that it sounds like they are going in West Town Pub.

Very underwhelmed by the ankeny Mullets location. Wobbly tables and they spent a ton of money to make it look like a crap hole and they didn't even do that well. Food was meh, with a sub par beer selection.

It seems like anything good in/around the metro that expands to Ankeny ends up sucking at that location. Fong's sucked. And the Waterfront in Ankeny sucks IMO.

I think the pizza was the same and you could still get a pint of Axe Man and a slice for around $5-6 during happy hour but it would have fit in the old downtown area much better than the upscale prairie trail location. Hard to replicate the great hole in the wall atmosphere of the OG.

I always thought Mullets was about 90% location and atmosphere. Hanging on the rooftop by the river and Principal Park with a beer is great. Food was solid but not anything out of the ordinary.

Some places just don’t franchise well for a variety of reasons. Flying Mango in DM is my favorite but I don’t think it could ever replicate based on the hands on approach by the owner.

Anything not put on South Duff is a win. West Side of Ames legitimately only has a JJ, McDonalds, papa johns and Chinese restaurant. Though a large portion of the city lives near by

All I can think of is it's closer to bike trails out there maybe? Isn't that their thing?

I've been for breakfast several times and liked it. We were also able to rest in the upstairs patio before it got too cold and it's great up there.

Same story when zombie burger came to town. Why they thought a restaurant that had an atmosphere in the EV made sense in a strip mall bay in north Ankeny made sense i have no idea. That couldve done alright in uptown

The restaurants in summerset have been doing well. Location doesn’t really matter in Ames. Good service or deals goes a long way.

Mullets is pretty good. A lot of it is the location on the bike path, The older unique building, the River right there, Right by Sec Taylor (Principle Park). It has everything. It's a cool joint. Wondering if they will just open a generic type version in Ankeny. I can't see it being as cool as the original.
