This reminds me of when the gay community was upset about the Martin Short character in Father of the Bride. The movie's creators pointed out that there was never any reference as to the sexual orientation of the character. Apparently it was the gay community that assumed the characer must be gay simply because he was effiminate.

Read the article more closely. It says the ad "barely ruffled feathers" in the UK. It was Americans who complained about it and caused the ad to be pulled, even though it had never run in the US.
