Morel Mushrooms?

I wish.. if anyone on here hunts and sells I’ll pay a premium price per lb.

Looked a little bit this morning as the sun was coming up in a familiar place for them. Didn’t see any. I think there was some flood damage in the area I was in.

Might head south next weekend. Supposed to be warm all week with some rain.

I think it’s going to be a bit yet, especially central Iowa. Seems like a rain and 3 straight nights in the 60’s seems to make them pop.

Down here near Centerville there was a lot of moisture (surface) until last week with all the wind. Someone posted the ground temps, thanks.

What does everyone else use when Morel hunting? I like to use a four ten. I’ve found a 12 or 16 gage doesn’t leave much left of the shroom.

For sure a pointer. Flushing dogs just spook the Morels too much. They're just harder to track once spooked.

Learned this last week and just makes me like morels more. The thick footed morel species "farms" bacteria in the soil, spreading it around, fertilizing it, then consuming it later. There is a Forbes write up about it but I learned it from the book "Entangled Life", worth a read if you are interested in that stuff.

We are hoping the rain this week with the warmer temps will get them popping. If the weather cooperates it might be a bumper crop this year with all the derecho damage.
