Re: C tourney

1) why can't we have both like we did two years ago. 60 pts a game is akin to watching paint dry. Johnny packed em in, and the slow down style following that resulted in less ticket sales depite better team success. No we will have slow + no big name recruits, that is not a good combination for selling tix.
2)Never exclusively and that is not the point. You need to have a few star players on your team at least to excel, ala fizer and tinsley. Most of the rest of that team was role players, and it was the best team we have ever had, in large part due to the fact we had what should have been the player of the year and burger boy fizer and super stud guard in jamaal.Gruber, jacobsen, stout and coleman may have started for 90% of the teams in the country, but we surely don't strive to be in the 89th percentile. That would put us in the mid 30s. Although a few of them could have started for montana, or mizzu st. or illinois southern, none would have started for tx, ku, uk, fla, unc, etc.
A national recruiting base is key. Johnny did ok, but he got most of his greats from michigan where he had extensive ties. This staff doesnt have those, or ties to chicago, so you have to go national. Wisconsin is the most boring team in america, also it is not the best program in the big ten(try mich st. or Ill) so there goes that.
3)His team lost in the second round of the MVC tourney last year, although they actually won it one. They always knocked off a LSU, ISU or Iowa, but would struggle mightely against CU, WSU, BU, etc during conference play, hense never winning a conf. title despite often having the most impressive conf. win.
4) all players come to play for a coach. That is the way it is. The flint kids would not have come to ISU if not for Orr. no floyd no fizer, and morgan had his guys. The differnce is when floyd came in noone left (completely different style of play), LE lost very few key guys, WM lost nothing, and mcd lost the farm.

I doubt that when Tinsley was recruited he was seen as a star. He was what unranked or if he was ranked it was not very high. Look at all of the ISU teams with success. Yes, they have had one or two star players, but mostly it has been the low ranked kids that lead our team. Fizer led the team, but we would never have gotten there without Paul Shirley or Jamaal Tinsley. Jared Homan was the leader of our last NCAA tournament team. We rely on the in-state kids and the low ranked kids to be the base of our teams. We arent to that level yet where we can rely on 4-5 stars to take out team deep every year. Hopefully we will get to that status soon.
