Milwaukee Mcdermott sighting

The worst decisions/happenings in recent ISU bball history have been A.) some schitzstik in Missouri sending pics of Eustachy to the Rag. & B.) Wesley Johnson leaving.

While I agree it has probably has hurt ISU's record but having Larry get caught was a good thing. Loved him as a coach but he had some issues he had to take care of. We can't place basketball above his health and family. From the little bit that I've seen him on TV now, he looks great, with standing the record/team he coaches.

McDermott isn't responsible for the lowering of the bar, that falls squarely on the shoulders of Wayne Morgan. Hands down the worst decision in recent ISU basketball history.

What facts do you have to support your argument? Morgan coached for three seasons...all three teams had winning records. Morgan made postseason 2 of the 3 years with an NIT Final Four run and a second round loss to the eventual National Championship team. If Morgan lowered the bar then McDermott must be burying it.

Listen, the discussion we have been having relates to our current coach. I don't think anyone wants to have a GM v. WM thread. But, this argument that the woes of ISU BB under GM are the fault of WM is really quite tiresome...and is becoming even more tiresome with each passing year. It is interesting that GM's best year at ISU was his first year. If WM was so horrible and GM is so great, one would think that the first year of GM would have been the worst year and then we should progressively be getting better the longer we are away from WM...but that has not been the case.

We get it, you hate McDermott. You don't have to beat it to death every thread you post in. It gets annoying really fast.

Definitely a good thing for the Lar-dog, no arguments here, probably for ISU bball long-run too as I think his later teams were spiraling out of control as well.

let me add to my previous list of decisions/mishaps:

C.) Mike Taylor stealing/non-conforming - again, good for Mike, not so much for ISU bball.

D.) Morgan's lack of discipline and control of team. Exciting bball and great recruits, just lack of consistency and discipline. Which is what led to his demise as coach.

I absolutely love these type of posts. You "get" nothing. I don't personally know McDermott so I certainly do not have any "hate" for the man.

It is quite clear that the results he has produced to date are below my expectations for ISU BB. I am a fan of ISU BB...not any particular coach. I was bleeding cardinal & gold long before McDermott became our coach and I will still be doing it long after he is gone. He is a temporary caretaker of the program and I am not satisfied with how the program has "progressed" under his leadership.

What I find annoying is the adulation, fawning and excuse making by people on this site for a coach that is not producing.

I don't really disagree with a whole lot of what people are saying in this thread but it's pretty clear to most of us that the state of ISU bball right now is worse than it was 10 yrs ago (or whatever timeframe you want to put on it). It sounds to me like you're putting most if not all of the blame on Gmac's shoulders while others are pointing elsewhere. Personally, I think it's more of a combination of things. Wesley J leaving, Taylor being an idiot, Morgan's coaching (and his antics after getting let go), AND GMac's coaching/recruiting. I don't think we can point our fingers at any one thing/person and say they're the sole reason that this program is where it's at today.

The 2 inherited the program in very different conditions. Morgan took over a solid program that 3 quality coaches had helped build before him and he left it in much worse shape than when he took over. McD walked into a rebuilding process that was reeling from the Morgan years. I'm not saying McD is doing great or is our savior or anything like that but I think theres some positive things going on that weren't going on a few years back. This season is a big one for McD, making the tourney or landing HB would buy him a lot of slack. If he does neither of those, he'll be feeling alot of pressure this time next season.

Where I struggle is why people think coaching is limited to "game time decisions"? To me, if a team is not performing well on game day that is a sign that either practices and/or other game preparation like weight training and driving player retention are not being lead successfully.

That to me is all coaching. What we see on game day is only about 10-20% of the coaching, with the rest done behind the scenes, out of sight. So when I read about people asking "tell me in the game where Greg made a bad decision" I just shake my head. A good coach shouldn't have to do much more than manage the game, all the coaching impact should already be installed into the players and thus out of fan view on game day.

So when I see over and over again the same bad decision by the same players in multiple games that leads me to believe that coaching is lacking, even when Greg calls them out in a game. If the coaching is done right, then the bad decisions shouldn't be occurring over and over in games, just the exceptions or new issues... not the same ones.

With that said, I too think Greg has had his fair share of tough breaks and I'm hopeful given time he'll show that he is a great coach. But results so far doesn't lend much support to say Greg is a great or even good Big 12 caliber coach.

I know all the other past records like Orr's, but Orr is Orr, Greg is Greg, and only time will tell the story. We can use these past examples of how current success doesn't necessary equate to future success, but it's not support to suggest that Greg will be or is a great or even good B12 caliber coach.

Good post...Like what?

I have seen the two quotes highlighted above many times on this board in the arguments for McDermott by those that blindly (IMHO) support him.

Do you think on that day that success would have been defined as three losing seasons but by year four we might have a team that can possibly make the postseason if no one gets hurt and all our new guys are as good as their billing?
I absolutely love these types of posts. You "get" nothing.
I do not doubt that in your mind you have read posts that people have pledged to blindly support McD, whether he wins or loses, because "no one wants to win more than Coach Mac" or "Coach Mac has forgotten more basketball than most people will ever know". Selective observation can be hard to overcome. Given that you have seen the blind supporters post these quotes "many" times- it should not be hard for you to generate a link.
Do you actually think anyone is defining McD's record thus far as a success? Most that take the time to respond to your nonsensical posts perceive the first 3 years as nothing but a disappointment. The attempt is to not let a cursory review of the first three years determine how to feel about the next 6 years.

If WM was so horrible and GM is so great, one would think that the first year of GM would have been the worst year and then we should progressively be getting better the longer we are away from WM...but that has not been the case.
After the transition, McD had four players remaining from the previous year. The scramble this caused to simply field a team, and the lack of success in Year 2 and 3 are not mutually exclusive.

What I find annoying is the adulation, fawning and excuse making by people on this site for a coach that is not producing.
You can conceptualize annoyance?

Awe man! I love it when our guys just all stand around at the 3 point line! Please don't have them move around more! I love watching games with High School final scores!:jimlad:
I too would like to see better movement (by the ball and without the ball), and more attacking (que Tornado Man:smile:). I would take the High School scores TF brought to ISU in no time.
