Where I struggle is why people think coaching is limited to "game time decisions"? To me, if a team is not performing well on game day that is a sign that either practices and/or other game preparation like weight training and driving player retention are not being lead successfully.
That to me is all coaching. What we see on game day is only about 10-20% of the coaching, with the rest done behind the scenes, out of sight. So when I read about people asking "tell me in the game where Greg made a bad decision" I just shake my head. A good coach shouldn't have to do much more than manage the game, all the coaching impact should already be installed into the players and thus out of fan view on game day.
So when I see over and over again the same bad decision by the same players in multiple games that leads me to believe that coaching is lacking, even when Greg calls them out in a game. If the coaching is done right, then the bad decisions shouldn't be occurring over and over in games, just the exceptions or new issues... not the same ones.
With that said, I too think Greg has had his fair share of tough breaks and I'm hopeful given time he'll show that he is a great coach. But results so far doesn't lend much support to say Greg is a great or even good Big 12 caliber coach.
I know all the other past records like Orr's, but Orr is Orr, Greg is Greg, and only time will tell the story. We can use these past examples of how current success doesn't necessary equate to future success, but it's not support to suggest that Greg will be or is a great or even good B12 caliber coach.
